ROTJ questions...

Post by A-Wing_Slash »

I have watched ROTJ many times, but there are two questions about it that have always puzzled me.
1. What was the point of Luke turning himself in, the showdown in Palpatine's throne room, and with Darth Vader saving Luke? Wouldn't everyone have been just as dead when Wedge and Lando blew the power thingy? Could Palpatine have Sithed that problem away if he had been alive then?

2. Why didn't Darth Vader order the Executer to tractor the shuttle Tyderium into its hangar bay? Stormies kill the commandoes, and then Vader has his way with Luke. Barring that, how did Han and co get to the surface? couldn't the Imperial sensors have seen that the shuttle was not going where it said it was? Since the Emperor knew an attack was coming, why wasn't a group of elites on there ass the instant the shuttle touched down?

If you can help me with either of these question it would be much apreciated.

Luke wanted to save his father from the Dark Side.

Arrogance. Vader said that he would deal with them. When Vader says he's going to do something, nobody with half a brain is going to question him.

for #1, yoda said he must face Vader, in order to become a Jedi Knight, and if he didn't confront him, Palpatine probably would've escape, maybe. anyway, Palpatine was too busy with Vader and Luke, and he couldn't focus on the fleet combat, making it easier for the Alliance (battle fleet meditation)

#2, the Emperor said "a legion of my best troops await them", and it is possible there was a small portion of the Alliance fleet nearby to help if the Tydirium needed to escape (SWTC idea) doesn't it take time to power up tractor beams, so they might escape

As for Luke turning himself in wasn't to distract Vader from killing the Rebels aswell as to try to redeem Vader from the Dark Side.

As for the Shuttle, didn't Palpatine want the Rebels to get in so that no one could warn the rest of the Rebel fleet that its a trap to destroy them all. If someone is observing to make sure that the shuttle gets through and the shuttle doesn't the Rebels would have attacked and the trap planned for them would be valid anymore right?

arrgh I didn't read what I wrote for the second part.
What I meant was that if Luke never makes it to the surface then if someone is watching to make sure they do then that ship would report to the rebel fleet that the mission failed and that they don't have a chance in hell of winning unless that shield is brought down.

Luke wanted to confront his father and turn him from the Dark Side, which he eventually succeeded in doing.

Vader wanted to alert the Emperor that Luke had joined the attack on the Shield Generator, which significantly altered their plans because it meant that they should try to capture at least one of the commandoes. As for not having people immediately attacking the shuttle, that would've risked the operatives sending a signal (or failing to send a signal) to the Alliance fleet that would've alerted them not to launch the attack. The trap would've been no good if Imperial troops had thwarted the Alliance commandoes so quickly that the fleet realized the ruse. They assumed that the attack on the Bunker would be unsuccessful since they had enough troops there to stop the commandoes, but they also needed the commandoes to succeed up until the point where they would destroy the Bunker--precisely when the Imperial troops moved in to capture Han, Leia, and the others (ie. at the last possible instant).

Actually it's exactly the opposite. If Luke hadn't show up for "showdown" Palpatine would order the starfleet to engage the rebels with their capital ships as soon as the rebel fleet exited hyperspace and by the time Han disabled the shield Lando and Wedge would already died a flaming death.

I wouldn't call it arrogance. They stilll needed the Commando team to penetrate the shield so that part 2 of Palp's plan of ensnaring the Rebels in his Trap (the Rebel Fleet) would come to play. Remember that he wanted to Draw out as much of the Rebel Forces so that he could decisively defeat them, thus leaving them crippled.
