Shield Absorption

How much can the shields of an Imperial Star Destroyer (not the Eclipse class ones) absorb? What is the limit?

Can they absorb the blast from an LTL (6-10 MT)?
A blast from an MTM (High MT low GT figures)?
A HTL (Low hundred GT)?
Death Star Super Laser (DSSL, really high something, I don't know)?

The Acclamator class Assault ship has the shield capacy of 7e22 W (max) and it's an 20 year old troop transport so it's a consevative lower limit for the ISD (or heaven forbid SSD) (souce AOTC:ICS).
plus your weapon yield are too low.

and IIRC the superlaser had lower limit yield of 1E38 J

Are they too low? How so?

HTL are around 200+ gigatons, and LTLs are around 6 to 10 (asteroid scene) megatons. So MTLs would be somewhere midway (in exponential terms, rather than linear).

The lower end yield of the Super laser seems a bit low. 239 Gigatons? This is around what I am saying for Turbolasers.

MTLs are 200GT, not HTLs....and this is on a 20 year old transport.

And where the flying fuck did you you get 239 GT for the Superlaser?

1E38 Joules = 23.9E18 GT or 23.9 billion billion GT.

You forgot a whole lot of zeroes there.

I've seen figures for ISD shielding typically reach triple digit TT level. IIRC it was based on reactor scaling and weapons calcs, etc. And as already stated, your weapons figures are off.

Ah. Sorry about that slight error (using the wrong number in this calc thingy).

That's alot.

How does anything penetrate an ISDs shield then? Does it regenerate (e.g. can it drop its shields from two hits of half its capacity, or does it need to be one whole hit)?

Essentially the way it goes is shots get through because the asorbation is unable to bleed it away.

A shot of random GT hits ship. Shield asorbs completely. Ships doesn't notice crap.

Multiple shots hit ship, shields unable to bleed all energy. The leftovers hit the ship. If ships shield generators are overloaded, it can raise them but requires energy...ship has no shield for that particular area for a time.

This is how they took the Executor down.

Worse comes to worse, if generators destroyed...that area is screwed.

Wars shields can be a bit of a complicated topic. I actually started my own thread some time ago here to help myself to understand it. (The heat sinks, neutrino radiators, dissipation rates, etc) But I'll try to give the short and sweet of it.

As Wars shields are segmented into arcs, it is possible to overwhelm a specific arc without taking out the entire shield grid. This is how the Rebels were able to inflict damage on the Executor at the Battle of Endor. They concentrated all firepower on the ship, per Ackbar's orders. And in doing so, stripped the bridge shield segment. Also note that as Wars shields are measured in wattage. So the speed of the damage being delivered will be a factor as well.

Hope this is helpful. If you want, I can link you a couple of other threads that discusses it in greater detail if you want to go into greater depth.

Edit: sorry, GR already hit the topic of the Executor while I was working on my reply.

The max heat sink is approximately the peak power for several minutes (I measured at least 4) minus what the peak dissipation rate would be for that same time.

It ends in the 10^27 joules range.

Ender, just out of curiousity, can you either detail your findings, or PM me with them? I'd be interested in learning more.

Search for shields, There was a thread back in June/May where me and Connor tried to hammer some stuf out about them. That's where I timed it and such.

As for figuring dissipation rate, its usually 1/3rd to 1/5th peak power, I assumed 1/3rd to make it low end.

I'll check into it. Thanks for the info.
