Just out of curiosity, was there ever any explanation of what Jerjerrod meant when he ordered the flooding of certain sectors to slow down the Rebel fighters that were careening through the DS superstructure on their way to the reactor?

perhaps with water?

Water would provide a pretty good barrier to a high speed spacecraft. It also could be flooding area with high levels of radiation which might kill the rebel pilots inside the fighters.

It could be many things even Hypermatter fuel whick would definitatly block pathways. I wonder how many Rebel pilots were lost since the fill only follows the group with Lando. They couldn't be the only group to attempt it.

wouldn't the shields protect them? the Falcon did fineby Cresih ststion, but they decided to be safe

Yeah, the only way radiation is gonna hurt them is if it has the energy density of a laser cannon.

This is from the novelization, I trust?

Most probably it simply means opening up the stopcocks of any liquid materials running about the place. I don't think X-wings would react well to a couple thousand tons of sewage floating about... :P

Hence my use of the word HIGH. As it was speculation anyway it wasn't really important. Raw sewage would do nasty thing including draing their particle shield and gum up just about everything mechanical on the outside of the ship.

At the speeds they were going, crashing into any liquid would be almost as bad as smashing into concrete. Once you go past a certain speed even smashing against gas will do Very Bad Things (TM) to a spacecraft.

Hence why it's more or less a given that most starfaring civilizations have some sort of 'navigational deflector'...

I really should have posted this in the first place...

Let's imagine that they flood a passage with sewage. Say, 5 km of passage are flooded? Sounds reasonable (and quite generous) considering we are talking of a sphere with a radius of 450 Km. The starfighters crash into this wall of liquid, let's suppose they survive (quite likely). First off we have confusion, some of the fighters may loose control and smash into the wall, which they will most definitely not survive. The shields would be weakened in someway or another, plus they will be slowed down. This allows TIE fighters to re-direct through unflooded passages to intercept them, and/or for said TIEs to have more time to shoot down the Rebels. The death of Palpatine, however, made these tactics disorganized and poorly executed at best.

Actually, the fact that we clearly don't see Lando and Wedge go the entire way into the structure (unless someone can show me where in the footage we see them go through 400+ Km worth of tunnels), makes it possible that they flew trough whatever it was that they "flooded" the passage ways with. The fact that such an unusual thing was not mentioned anywhere makes this unlikely, but not impossible.

They could be flooding the interior with interference. Jamming the fighter's sensors would prevent them from plotting a course through the Death Star's superstructure, probably leading to some unfortunate crashes.

that too. the Return of the Jedi novel describes that happening .
