KDY-v150...and an unlucky ISD

Do you remember that scene from ESB?
When Hoth Ion Controll opening fire and the ISD -I think the Tyrant- has been disabled?
The KDY-v150, ground base ion cannon fired three shots.
Even at the first blast's impact we can see as the ion blast starts disabling the ship.
That means:
1. The ISD's shield were down or on low level, wich I doubt.
2. The ion blast was so strong that it was capable to knock out the shield and had enough energy to start the disabling effect also. (It was the first blast)
So what do you think, what has happened?
...and how strong is the KDY-v150 compared to the ISDII shield?
I think we should use this situation as well for calculating the exact shield rate of an ISD!

Unless we are going to use game stats, I don't think we can really do anything with that except to say that SW planetary weapons with planetary grade power generation is even more ridiculously powerful than SW capital ship weapons.

Indeed. A better method would either be scaling from the Acclamator figures or calculating from the battle of Endor.

OK!
But what's your opinion about the situation itself?
Which one is right, point 1. or 2. ?

Considering the fact that ground-based heavy turbolasers have a barrel diameter of 25 meters, (ie must be very powerful), I'd say option 2 is a logical coice here.
Alternatively, the ISD's ray shields may have been down.
(Particle shields are always at least running on low power).

Thanks!
How lucky that the filthy rebels didn't have time for it's uninstallation!!!
On the other hand the probe droid scanned the area of Hoth base, it's strange that it didn't identified the presence of the ion cannon?!

And if it did, what difference would it have made?
Mind you, ion cannons tend to pass through shields.

Yes, but it has a very tight firing field comparing to the whole orbit.
So Capt. Lennox may place his ship elswhere....

Actually Lennox didn't have much of a choice, he couldn't simply go and disobey a direct order from his commanding officer even if it was as moronic as Ozzel's order.

What good would a SD on the other side of the planet be?
The only thing it could do there was to make sure the rebels didn't fly out that way. Which I'm sure is why we didn't see the Executor.
Someone had to be in orbit over the rebel base. You didn't see him get choked for letting a transport go, did you..

I am gonna leave it to a much better man that i do come up with what a Ion Cannon did to the ISD
http://www.stardestroyer.net/tlc/Ion/index.html
No really please read the site before asking questions Lord Wond already covered.

SW planetary weapons, including this ion cannon, are clearly powerful enough to destroy even the largest ship shields. The ISD was simply overwhelmed.

Planetary weapons are VERY powerful. Look at the reactor sizes!
And Ion Cannons ignoring shields in bullshit and contradicted by Isard's Revenge and ESB

Lord Edam did some scaling a while back and came out with a 500 TT - 5 PT for a planetary TL, which is stated to be 4x the power of a planetary Ion Cannon.
If all the shots hit the same place, it would be enough to punch through the shields.

Why, thank everyone for there support of me. I'm pretty sure the Tyrant was a mark II, but I coul be wrong. Anyway, he had others too go ahead, and Ozzel would of blaed him though Lennox was ne of the most dedicating Captains.

If I may.. I never said "unhindered" I said "tend to pass through".
There is ample proof that shields provide protection against ion cannons. There is also evidence that they pass through easier than turbolasers.
I hope that explains my POV better. I didn't think I would need to clarify, but internet is such a 2-dimensional form of communication.

Yes that's true but if Ozzel had known the presence of the ion cannon, he may place the Tyrant out of it's range.
Bah, too many "if"...
Anyway it was quite stupid in the movie that only the SDs formed the blockade, they didn't launch their fighters.
PS: I think all the SDs in the Death Squadron were mark IIs.
There were some ISD mark I and mark II with the same name.
After the mark I has been destroyed or pulled out from duty, a new ship got the same name.

Damn my stupidity!
I checked them...Only the Tyrant and the Avenger were mark IIs.

Actually it's like this:
Avenger: ISD II
Accuser: ISD II
Tyrant: ISD II
Entor: ISD II
Devastator: ISD I
Deva, the ISD I model, is visible in ESB several times.
I'm gonna try to find a pic....

Let's see...
The Avenger and the Tyrant are ISDII.
The Accuser I'm not sure but could be. It's the same that was destroyed at the Battle of Calamari?
The Devastator is mark I.
Some say that the fifth was the Stalker some say it was the Entor.
Fact is that the Stalker was on mission in the Outer Rim at the same time.
The possibility of having two Stalker is very low.
So it must be the Entor -which I don't know anything about- that's why I agree with you.

Entor's tower, which we clearly see in the shot where it's damaged by the asteroid, is of the ISD II type. Stalker however, is an ISD I.

OK!
Till that time I thought the line-up was like this:
SSD Executor-Vader/Ozzel/Piett
ISDII Avenger-Lorth Needa/Ferdas
ISDII Tyrant-Lennock
ISDI Devastator-?
ISDI Stalker-?
ISDI Conquest-Alima
But I'm open to any new ideas!

Thanks I read it before.
Please take a look here:
www.hyperjump.net/swguides/sdguide/sdguide.html
Search for the Executor and the related other Death Squadron ISDs.
Now I'm confused, which is correct?
What do you think Frank?[/url]
