I wouldn't mind having the Vader one...

IMO possibly one of the worst ideas for a Star Wars toy ever. . .

The Luke one does as well, though I think Vader and Grevious are rather neat.

Thats because they commited one of the worst mistakes of Transformers toys.. Focusing solely on the "Vehicle Mode" of the toy, sacrificing anything nice about the "body" mode.

These have been posted, IIRC...

Oh yes.

Vader so perfectly represents it.

Literally they didn't need to do "Vader"...just make his TIE and then give some random good body.

I disagree. The vehicle modes absolutely must look right first and foremost. I loathe the crazy looking crap they put out for things like Armada. 'Robots in disguise' is one of the catch phrases.

That said, I'm all for good robot bodies. It's likely just a bad idea to make them character specific.

It's my personal preference. I really don't like the crazy looking vehicles. As I see it, they're supposed to be vehicle X that becomes a robot. All the original Transformers looked, first and foremost designed as vehicles/items that could become robots. I don't believe a good looking vehicle mode means you have a crap robot but the reverse is occasionally true. Look at the 'transforming' Gundams. Utter crap in their 'vehicle' modes.

Fact is Darth Vader isn't made to transform. They were always going to be adding bits to the robot mode, and when you're not only trying to mimic shape but an actual costume it's just not going to end well. I imagine had they simply taken various SW vehicles and just made transformers out of them they'd look a whole lot better as robots.

Oh, just stick to buying Alternators like everyone else and quit yer bitchin'. :P

Although the engineering is admittedly better than expected given what they had to work with, the general concensus I recall seeing in the TF community isn't too positive, either. At least among the non-squirrelly fans.

So what, are we talking about half of the general TF fan population, then? :P

The notion of "Star Wars Transformers" should put a stiffy in the pants of any good child of the eighties. A shame they're so crappy.

They should have just done a line of Autobots and Decepticons, with Rebel and Imperial vehicle forms respectively. Having Starscream and the other jets all turn into TIE fighters would have been kickass.

Vader as a TIE Advance X1, and Grievous as a wheelbike, look cool-- but then again, they're both cyborgs. Luke as an X-Wing looks okay, thanks to his helmet-- Obi-Wan as a Jedi starfighter looks awful, because of the head design.

I have to agree with Shaithis, with the exception of Vader and Grievous, Hasbro should've had the Transformers be Autobots and Decepticons. It wouldn't be hard to do so.

Or the old custom van toys from the late 70s?

It depends on whether or not they made Chewbacca. It would kick ass to have Chewie and his sweet pimpin' van.

Nope, they only made two models: heroes and Vader.

What the hell kind of marketing strategy is that? They totally should have made a scale custom van toy with a Chewbacca figure, and he'd have stuff like his bowcaster and some cool shades. I'd picture his van painted up with some totally killer mural on the sides like a Kashyyyk catarmaran in a Big Daddy Roth style and in the back there'd be a huge stereo system with some Jefferson Airplane LPs, a matress, a bunch of posters, and a kegger full of beer.

I wasn't around when those custom van toys were available, but considering that Chewie's copilot of the Millenium Falcon, I imagine his van would look something like the Falcon. Oh, yeah, don't forget to give him a leather jacket, for that "Hells Angels" look. (FYI, the Hells Angels once attacked hippies who were protesting against the Vietnam War, calling the hippies "commies" and "traitors"-- I don't think it's safe to make "gay biker" jokes in their presence.)
