Sorry if this has been discussed.
But I was wondering how big the Imperial StarFleet was and by that I mean the total amount of Star Destroyers and other major combat vessels in the Empire's inventory.

Speculation based on canon and official sources:
The Imperial Starfleet, which is incharge of guarding Imperial systems, numbers: 378,000,000 combat starships and 306,000,000 sublight picket starships.
The Imperial Navy, which is in charge of offensive operations (like hunting down the Rebel Alliance) numbers: 25,000 Heavy Destroyers 1,001-1,600 meters long; 5,000 Light/Medium Cruisers 1,601 meters long to 4,999 meters long; 5,000 Heavy Cruisers/Battlecruisers/Carriers/Battleships/Commandships 5,000+ meters long (Estimated Max superlaser equipped: 250).

Shit Adrian, you beat me to it.
But really this is a question asked all the time. If you think this might have been discussed before run a search. Won't someone think of the bandwidth!

Such is considered high end though. And there is absoloutly no canon or offical support for a division between the "Imperial Starfleet" and "Imperial Navy", all known sources use the terms interchangably.
That said, most people consider Marinas most excellent research based on the WEG order of battle to be a theoretical level of ships and presence that the Empire was striving towards but didn't reach. The sourcebook itself supports this assertion. Like according to the OOB pages Marina uses, there should have thousands upon thousands of Torpedo spheres in service. But the datafile on the Torpedo sphere in the same book explicitly says that only seven have been built.
The reason the Empire didn't reach these numbers is at least partialy because of diversion of the resources that should have gone to building these ships into projects like the two Death Stars which are worth millions of ISD's and also explains crazy statements like Pealleon saying the Executor almost bankrupted the Empire, if it and her sisiters had insanely high price tags to help explain where the resources were going.
Crackens Threat Dossier (another WEG RPG sourcebook) IIRC has a quote which comments that the Imperial fleet was X times larger then the New Republic fleet at the time the book was set. I think His Divine Shadow worked that out to be roughly 8 million ships.

At the time of Yavin.

Actually, DSI is ridiculously cheap (20 Sector Groups) and DSII isn't exactly a huge galactic dent either. Executor is also only 20x ISD. For all of WEG's (Rebel) efforts to pretend otherwise, in the GFFA, Big = Bargain.

5000 IIRC. 2500*5000=12.5 million or so AFAIK. Even 2000*5000 = 10 million.

I was quite sure the WEG Imperial Sourcebook was set at the time of TESB.

THAT isn't cheap, especialy given that a hell of a lot of sector groups are more theoretical formations then real groups as you get further and further away from the core.

Yes but its not like the entire Galactic Empire knows whats going on. In fact I would presume the vast majority of planets are often told the same vauge stories about where their resources are going and vauge stories about the real size of the Imperial Fleet.

I have no idea what the hell your saying here Kaz. And you can't use the WEG sourcebooks on one hand then dismiss them as rebel propaganda on the other. Its all or nothing.

Can you perhaps explain or post a link to this Marinas explanation of the Imperial Navy?

Most people point to the number of ISDs as being 25,000 as stated in Spectre of the Past. However, it's possible that the number given was in reference to a particular timeframe, and not the Empire at its height (not sure, haven't actually read that particular book) as the Imperial Sourcebook gives 24 ISDs in a sector group, and that there were thousands of sectors in the galaxy. Low end estimate would give you 2,000 sectors for a minimum of 48,000 ISDs.

Naw, they just got Executor. After the ISB came the RASB AFAIK, THEN we get Hoth, after which Naal made GG3.

It is very cheap when compared to its firepower. It is especially stated that this is the average group that exists, and that the Imperial buildup is fast sidelining it to a minimum, right in the same book. Sorry. Phantom SG Theory does not work.

Actually, the real point here is that WEG and Bantam era EU (Rebel in SoD) can't get its fucking story straight. You keep reading the text, about how much of a fucking waste of money they are, or how people are literally starving from the taxation from Imperial militarization (see the Crispin series). Yet they don't keep their story straight, so you find companies that can quite easily pay for thousands or even tens of thousands of Star Destroyers. You then hear that the DSI cost only 20 Sector Groups. On a firepower-cost basis, that's fucking CHEAP.

There are thousands of SECTGRU by ISB's own admission.
