Imperial Rank. Vader or Grand Moff?

Post by Superman »

Ok, remember on... Ok, I am an idiot. I forgot which movie. Anyway. Grand Moff Tarkin (I believe) basically ordered Vader to stop choking an Imperial officer.

Do Grand Moffs outrank Vader? What about a Grand Admiral?

And just what the heck is a Grand Moff?

I believe that a Grand Moff is a sector governor. Vader seems to be non-military. He's "Lord" Vader, so he's some sort of nobility (oviously not inherited)? Perhaps he respects Tarkin.

It is implied (IMHO) that the Emperor sent Vader to help Tarkin. When RotJ came around the Emperor sent Vader to take over from Jjerrod.

I was also under the impression that a Moff was a Govenor, so a Grand Moff was over various Moff's. Kind of like a Mayor, Govenor, President thing with the Emperor on top of the pyramid.

Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

I doubt anyone save for Palpy could boss Vader around...and live. It was probably a respect thing between Vader and Tarkin.

1. a) I think Vader was sent to assist Tarkin by the Emperor.
b) It says in the SWVD:
"Grand Moff Tarkin was one of the few who recognised Vader's capabilities in spite of his bizzare appearance and strange conduct, and as Tarkin's right-hand man Vader attained a new level of respect amongst the upper echelons of the Imperial military."
2.A Moff is the supreme commander of a Sector Group and the military official who governs the sector politically as well as martially.
Grand Moffs is a Moff's superior. A Grand Moff governs Sector Groups and/or Priority Sectors (sectors which need stronger control than usual.)

In ANH Vader was sent to help Tarkin and he was his superior.

After the destruction of the first Death Star, Palpatine promoted Vader to be more then Admirals or Moffs and made him the true leader of the Death Squadron.

But it's been cleared in some of the books. Maybe in SoTE?

Anyway the text said Vader was personally responsible for destroying the rebellion and he could use whatever he wants to achieve his goal.

...but only after ANH!

Tarkin was a Grand Moff, a regional governor. I think that it is a pseudo-millitary rank (explaining the ISF uniform), but primarily a civil government role.

Darth Vader was completely outside the Imperial chain of command. He was the Emperor's personal attack dog; answerable to the Emperor himself and none other. He was there to stop Tarkin getting any funny ideas about how to use his 'technological terror'.

I have always doubted the strict canonicity of the 'A New Hope' novelisation. It has always struck me as a stand-alone that doesn't fit in with the larger Star Wars universe as we know it today. It might even be strictly considered almost AU. Certainly, the descriptions of the Death Star's planetkilling capabilities suggest that Lucas' original vision of the station's main weapon was very different from the Superlaser that we know and love.
