The final instalment of George Lucas' Star Wars prequels was one of the major winners at the People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith won favourite movie and favourite movie drama at the awards.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres won favourite daytime talk show host and funny female star for the second year in a row.

Alias actress Jennifer Garner won female action star and female TV star.

'The audience rules'

Nominees for the People's Choice Awards were picked by a 6,000-strong Entertainment Weekly magazine panel, and winners were subsequently chosen by 21 million online voters.

Johnny Depp, who appeared last year in Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, again was named favourite male movie star.

Sandra Bullock beat Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman to take favourite female movie star.

George Lucas said the awards had special significance because they had been voted for by ordinary people.

"I'm not a big favourite with the critics, but who listens to them," Lucas said onstage. "The reason I make films is for you. The audience rules."

Reese Witherspoon, who won favourite leading lady in playing country singer June Carter in the film Walk the Line also thanked the public.

"You guys voted for us. Not the stuffy people in closed rooms... people who voted actually go to the movies," she said.

Brad Pitt won best leading man, while in the music categories former American Idol star Kelly Clarkson won favourite female performer, and country star Tim McGraw was best male performer.

I'm pleased with the results. Still, I found the voting process for the People's Choice awards to be pretty weird. Could you actually vote more than once, or was I misinterpriting the site? In any event, it seems that it was at least a bit better organized than the award poll on IMDb right now. Harry Potter for teh win!
