Clonetrooper Sources

Post by Joe »

I was just thinking; in light of the relatively small amount of troops coming out of Kamino, is it not unreasonable to suggest that the Old Republic had hired multiple planets (in secret, of course) to produce clonetroopers? It's fairly doubtful that one planet could produce enough clonetroopers for an entire galaxy. Maybe Obi-Wan had only found the tip of a very large iceberg with his visit to Kamino. And Sidious/Palpatine is definitely sneaky enough to pull it off. There are a few things I've been thinking about.

1) Kamino would very quickly become one of the primary targets of the
Separatist military were it to be pinpointed by Separatist intelligence
as the source of the clones. Surely the Republic/whoever planned out
the Clone War realizes this and would not place the military strength of
the Republic solely on the continued well-being of one planet.

2) The Separatist army is very diverse, which droids coming from many
different sources (the TradeFed, the Commerce Guilds, Geonosis, and
the Techno Union are only a few examples). Surely the more vast
Republic would act similarly, taking military forces from many different
regions.

It may also be possible that the clonetrooper armies of Kamino were built in secret only to give the Republic an adequte albeit very tiny force of high-quality shocktroopers to deal with some of the initial military engagements of the Clone Wars, with the REAL military build-up that would eventually lead to the Imperial miltary not being planned to take place until after the outbreak of the war.

Yes.

The clone force in AOTC was brilliant not because they were clones but because all Palpy had to do to give the Republic some sort of army was to nationalize an already built force with a pen stroke. Politically free. It allowed him to easily start a war that money, logistics, and time-minded Senators might have opposed strongly.

Needless to say, that advantage doesn't apply in the Empire. Given the instances of traitorous stormies, I don't see why they'd be predominantly clones either.

Sometimes I wonder about how much thought Lucas puts into his scripts. A single planet is just not capable of producing enough clones to exert any significant control in a galaxy as large as the one portrayed in star wars. Even with all their vehicles and equipment. 1.2 million is barely enough to take a single well fortified planet. The Republic was fortunate they were able to achieve surprise in their assault on Geonosis. And from the number of clones that are seen being hit by enemy fire during the film the number of availiable troops after the battle of geonosis is no doubt lower. The Republic would have no choice but to ramp up production on other planets. Perhaps, even beginning development of a faster method with new subjects for genetic material.

I would say about as much thought as the EU writers put into the novels (200 Dreadnaughts? I love your work, Timothy, but GOOD LORD).
