Jedi Auxiliaries what are they?

I just finished reading "Rogue Planet" and throughout the book they casually mention Jedi Auxiliaries with no further explanation give to what they are or their duties.

At first I assumed they were reffering to the Jedi Service groups such as Agricorps, medcorps, and explorcorps but as far as I know those groups have never been referred to as Jedi Auxiliaries or even refered to as a branch of the Jedi Order.

So does anyone know who these Jedi Auxiliaries are and what they do? Is it just a time they used in Rogue Planet for the service groups? Or is it something Greg Bear came up with but never went anyplace with?

Presumably the term "Jedi auxiliary" refers to those groups that were closely affiliated with the Jedi Order but were not, strictly speaking, part of it. This includes the Antarian Rangers of Antar IV, described by Hero's Guide as "a unique paramilitary organization of non-Force users who ... actively assist [the Jedi] whenever possible," who were dedicated to "acting as support troops for the Jedi," often deployed on "reconnaissance and covert operations to make the work of the Jedi easier." Another such group was the Pendarran Warriors of Pendarr III, described in Cracken's Rebel Operatives as "an independent group that fought with the Jedi Knights and the armies of the Old Republic during the Clone Wars."

It hardly need be mentioned, of course, that both the Antarian Rangers and the Pendarran Warriors were declared Enemies of the Empire and relegated to outlawry along with the Jedi Order itself, and were very likely targeted for liquidation by the Inquisitorius. Any other such groups were probably also anathematized at the same time, given that the Emperor had charged the Inquisitorius with "rooting out all that smacked of the old ways," according to the Dark Empire Sourcebook.

Wouildn't that also include Freedom's Sons (and Daughters?) mentioned first in the HAn Solo novels (Han Solo's Revenge, IIRC, the one with Fiolla of Lorrd) and then later in "Jedi Trial?"

Freedom's Sons. The name is "Freedom's Sons." At any rate, prior to their desertion from Republic Judicial service shortly before the Battle of Geonosis in 13 GR, they were no different from any other marshals in the Judicial Department, who had conventional law-enforcement functions independent of the Jedi Order. After Slayke and his crew deserted, they were legally regarded as pirates, and were actively hunted by the Jedi (at least until Supreme Chancellor Palpatine pardoned them), so one hesitates to call quarry "auxiliaries."

Not in every case. In "Jedi Trial" they call it Freedom's Sons and daughters. Just because you dislike the name doesn't make it true. (But then I've had that discussion ad nauseum with you before :P)

Yes, and the Princess of Wales was often called Princess Diana, but that doesn't make it correct.

Bah. We both know this is mere wishful thinking on your part. Like Scout or Anakin :P

In Battlefront 2 there's troopers (on Jedi side) who use blaster pistols and (as far as I could see) do not use the Force in the "order 66" scenario, it's possible that were (or were part of) the Jedi Auxiliaries

Thats what I was thinking at first but this book was published long before Battlefield II was released and there was no mention of Temple guards(nor did we see them in the movies) before that game.

it's possible that the generally keep to "public" areas of the Jedi temple (of which we've seen little of (if even any), even though we know they exist (the there's non Jedi working in the Temple))
