Were Yoda and Obi-Wan the only Jedi left in ANH?

This is probably a dumb question, but as I'm not familiar with the EU, I don't know a definitive answer to it.

Were Yoda and Obi-Wan the only living Jedi at the beginning of ANH, or did others manage to survive the purge and the intervening 20 or so years of being hunted by the Empire?

Yes, others survived, but virtually none.

Wasn't there mentioned in a couple of books about Jedi that successfully stayed hidden or were they just normal force users like Mara Jade.

If you wish to only take the movies into account, then yes, definitively and literally, they were the only two Jedi left. All others had perished, hunted down by Vader and the Empire.

Even if you take the EU into account, one might say that even former Jedi who survived were no longer Jedi, so you could still say that they were the only two Jedi remaining. Other survivors had ceased to be Jedi.
Err, ok, except a handful. Fine.

Most survivors had quit and gotten a job or raised families. I believe Kyle Katarn's dad was one of those.
The rest were either gradually hunted down or turned to the Dark Side.

I think even GL said in an interview that there were other survivors, it's just the movies didn't focus on them.

Almost. Plenty survived Order 66, but of course Vader hunted down nearly all of them. By ANH a handful of true Jedi were left(a few, like Jerec, turned to the Dark Side) but only a few masters, it seems.

I recall at least few Jedi who did not turn to the dark side and were not killed by the time of ANH...
  • Master Qu Rahn (friend of Kyle Katarn's father Morgan, got killed right in the beginning of Jedi Knight several years after ANH)
  • Jedi Brand Empatyos or whatever his name was (the Jedi and King of Ganath in Dark Empire II, who had suffered an even worse fate than Vader on Mustafar and died along with the Emperor)
  • Jedi Vima-da-Boda (I'm not sure if we can count her as a Jedi, though, she seemed to have lost so much of her sanity)
  • Master Ood Bnar (once again, courtesy of DE II - that tree-like Jedi)
  • Belsarion the Hutt (the Hutt Jedi in Planet of Twilight)
  • Another Jedi - this time human female - featured in PoT, but I can't recall her name (she and Belsarion were engaged in some power struggle and I'm not sure if they can still be counted pure Jedi; they seemed to be much more interested in selfish goals than serving the will of the Force)
  • Master Ikrit (a rabbit-like, diminutive Jedi trained by Yoda; Ikrit was hibernating in Force trance during the Jedi Purge and had been in that state for couple of centuries, if I remember correctly; he was awakened by Anakin Solo and Tahiri in Junior Jedi Knights
That's all I can remember now.

Let's just say the only Jedi that could make a difference by ANH were Yoda and Obi Wan.

Everyone knows that Mace Windu survived the events of RotS because a pile of refuse broke his fall. He then went into exile in the Outer Rim and didn't intervene in the events of the OT for some unknown reason.

Few more mentions:
Corwin Shelvay, who took an eye off Inquisitor Tremayne. (Galaxy Guide 9)

The Dark Woman, whom Vader dispatched some time just before the Battle of Yavin (Dark Horse Comics)

Small nitpick: Morgan Katarn was Force-sensitive, but not a Jedi. He may have been Rahn's Padawan, though; I can't remember the exact details.

Rahn was a knight at the time of RotS. He met up with Yoda on Dagobah (due to the force or something) and was given the rank of Jedi Master by Yoda, and apparently charged with finding the Valley of the Jedi.

There was also Echuu Shen-Jon, who had exiled himself on the planet Krant near the end of the Clone Wars. He was killed by Vader at some point between ANH and ESB after after coming out of hiding assist the Alliance. (Galactic Battlegrounds)

I thought that comic was Infinities?

Someone let loose some snakes on his starship, which kept him too busy to intervene.

The comic itself may be Infinity, but New Essential Guide to Characters does state that Vader defeated and killed the Dark Woman some time before the events of ANH.

Dark Lord has Vader hunting down and killing many Jedi Knights, and some Masters. Although Yoda and Obi-Wan were the only ones of any importance, I don't see what any others could have done to help the rebellion.

IIRC that part of Galactic Battlegrounds takes place before ANH.

Also Vergere, though she is extragalactic at the time with the Vong Invasion force.

You are correct; I was thinking of the follow-up mission with Luke in it.

actually he went into exile right at start of the clone wars (the decimator campain happens during the first year).

Well, even if Windu survived, he'd lost a hand and his brain was fried (regardless of any other injuries incurred in the fall). Can you blame him for dropping out (no pun intended) of the story?

I think it would be pretty damn cool for some grimy, one-handed, half-dead old black man to come out of the Coruscant lower levels and try to kill "Skywalker", though.

But there the Rebellion campaign takes you back to the planet where he went into exile after killing Sev'rance Tann and he shows up to help Luke and Leia. He ends up fighting a holding action against Vader while the others escape and Vader kills him.

Corran Horn

Kyp Durron (thank you KJA...).

And then there is Dathomir and it's inhabitants who have something resembling force powers as seen in Courtship of Princess Leia

Also that planet full of primitive force users Luke and Kam Solusar discovered in Dark Empire II

All were alive during alive during the events of ANH. most would become Jedi knights later on after the downfall of the Sith.

Like mentioned before there was no way they could have made any differenc during the time of the Galactic Empire. They were all 'discovered' by Luke and his new jedi order following the final downfall of Palpatine.

Edit:

I did not read the OP as carefully. I doubt any of the above were even alive during the time of the Jedi Purge.

However Dathomir and that planet on which Ood Bnar was 'hibernating' on were probably considered insignificant by the Empire.

That was the mistake I made too. Echuu never meets Luke; the last mission of the campaign is several years after the Vader one.

Alive is not the same as Jedi. Kyp would be a kid and Corran would probably be a teenager and neither knew they were force sensative. Corran's father was learning when the Clone Wars happened but he went into hiding and probably didn't finish his training.

However there was Elegos Itkla's uncle who dodged the purge but didn't dodge the Death Star.
