What happend with Vader after the destruction of the DS 1.
Was his fighter ftl-capable or did an imperial vessel pick him up?

FTL capable, but short range. In one of the comic books he manages to make his way to an Imperial outpost and commandeer a shuttle, which he takes to return to Coruscant.

He was in a TIE Advanced X-1, which has has hyperspace capabilities for short distances.

Something always bugged me about the ending of ANH: the ending ceremony. One would think the rebels would be busy packing up and escaping the system before thousands of Imperial ships come swarming into the system. Speaking of which why weren't there any warships escorting the Death Star?

I'm pretty sure the Ceremony was done on the fly; IIRC the OT:ITW shows them packing up in the cargo chambers below while its going on.
As for why there are no vanguard warships? Tarkin's arrogance, pure and simple.

I think the
Imperials would be challenged to put together a fleet that could successfully overwhelm the Death Star via brute force attack, let alone the meager resources of the Rebel Alliance.

Eh? The empire should have been able to bring together a good 50 or so Star Destroyers to escort the Death Star and make sure to finish the job of eliminating the alliance had they any semblance of competancy.

I think what U235 meant was that the Imperials themselves could hardly challenge the Death Star with their resources, and that the Rebels most certainly don't have their kind of resources. This would mean that an escort to the Death Star would be superfluous.

True it would seem to be overkill to bring a fleet of Star Destroyers with the Death Star to most imperial strategists who think in major fleet to fleet actions only.
However would not it have been prudent for the Empire to bring along some type of capital ships capable of handling fighters knowing as they(Tagge) did that the alliance possesed superior star fighters?
Typical Imperial arrogance, as has been stated

It would also have been prudent for Tarkin to actually have listened to Tagge when he delivered information on the exhaust port weakness and gotten the hell off the station.

Very true.

Considering the purpose of the Deathstar I wouldn't think overkill is something Imperials have a problem with.

There were gigantic hanger bays on the death star which could have housed them and so the 'escort' vessels could have very well been docked inside.

Very true.
Although the purpose of the Death Star was to intimidate systems to enforce their Doctrine of Fear. Therefore, they used the Death Star just as intended, and not as overkill.
In your statement replace Deathstar with 'nuclear bomb' and Imperials with 'Americans'.

Tarkin: "The Regional Governors now have direct control... fear will keep the local systems in line, fear of this battlestation"
Tarkin was arrogant, he probally told the other governors to back away from his dealings with the Rebels
Plus, the other governors may not have wanted to help Tarkin and liked their new power of doing what they wanted with their systems.

One question I have. Did the DS even have its shields up during that battle? You'd think if they did no Rebel ship would get through. There is no mention of shields, IIRC, just mention of the fighers passing through the DS magnetic field, right?

According to the EU, specifically the Marvel and Classic Star Wars comics, the Rebels spent an extended period of time on Yavin until Darth Vader completed the Executor to attack them with. It doesn't make much sense, but that's what it says.

it's not that wierd considering that Hoth had planetary shield that was capable of stoping the Imperial bombarment there It's not impossible that Yavin 4 had similar or better shield and/or defences (which would of course be irrelevant against the death star

However, if Yavin had such a shield, why wasnt it used when Yavin IV was bombarded in one of the other EU books?

I'm not familiar with the context above, but is it not impossible that the rebels simply took the shield with them after Yavin 4?

The Rebels took it with them in the evacuation?

Isn't the Death Star supposed to have had thousands of Tie Fighters? They should have been able to deal with the Rebel fighters easily enough unless Tarkin's arrogance kept most of them grounded.

Precisely the case. Only the squadron directly under Lord Vader's command was deployed.

I do believe that is the case. It is generally believed - though I am unsure of sources - that only Vader's personal squadron engaged. Some have argued that no more fighters were needed: after all, the TIEs experienced few casualties and defeated most of the attacking force.
