What do you like best about SW ?

The thing that made me a big fan of SW was how it combined mythology, ancient themes of sword and sorcery with a futuristic galactic civilization. It is perfect in every way in the OT films. This is what I like best about SW.
How about you ?

Star Destroyers. Big fucking ships in general are cool, but watching ANH and seeing the ISD flying over head shooting at the Corvette was a moment that totally captured my imagination and never left.

Seconded
As well as the sheer scale of the SW Universe, and that opening scene -- the Holy Crap Moment (tm) of the Star Destroyer rolling on and on and on..... then, you get to see what a REAL fight with deadly energy weapons looks like. After seeing Stormies in action, nothing else is quite the same

Lightsabers, the coolest swords in fiction.
I Also love the feeling of majesty, and of a greater story happening [one of the reasons most of the EU ticks me off (Save a few exceptions like the Han Solo trilogy)]
Sadly the latter opinion seems to be one only I [any most of
you guys share Concerning the EU [land of 4 galaxy threatening old ISD's
, and where every small conflict threatens to destroy the galaxy and of instantly corrupted Senators ]

Personnally I just like the battle of Endor and space battles.
Watching a Neb B going broadside with a Star Destroyer is pretty cool, kind of like what you get at see with old naval battles.
Of course the whole situation in that movie was great. Watching a tactically inferior force fight for their lives against ships which pretty much outclass them in every way.
The situation was nicely done and you can "see" the desperation that its going on with the Rebels since they are stuck between Rock and hard place but come out fighting.
Makes you feel all mellow inside knowing that a fleet of big bad ass ships can be taken on by a weaker foe and lose... the image of the SSD going down only amplifies the effect.
Pretty much like David and Goliath. Since the Rebels are so outmatched in numbers yet they always press the weak spot. As much as I like the good guys, the Star Destroyer is one of the best ships ever made in Sci Fi.
Wouldnt be surprised if everyone around the globe would be able to identify an SD and its affiliation just from a picture.
The Star Destroyer really does come across as a ship of power.

I'm fond of the scale, too. Sometimes I pop the RotS disk into the drive just to watch the huge ships duking it out like galleons.

The modern mythology aspect as well as their sheer entertainment value.

Depth. While the movies will always be the prime source of entertainment for me, and I'm certainly not one of those whackos who thing that the EU is superior to the films themselves, it is the EU that really has kept me interested. For all its faults, and there are many, the sheer scale and depth of the SW universe really sets it apart from others for me, makes it feel more real. Every world has a history, every creature a detailed biological description, every character a detail past (although the last part becomes a bit much on occasion).
And, of course, the movies are all quite awesome, especially when viewed as a whole.

My favorite part is when the RSS Guarlara exchanges broadsides with the Invisible Hand.
Not to mention both Imperator-class and Venator-class Star Destroyers. Venators have really nice lines.

Darth Vader. Watching him walk in on Leia's Blockade Runner and just demanding respect, Force-choking people without a second thought, it's totally cool.
Lightsabers as well. Possibly the coolest thing anyone has ever thought of.

Just my opinion, but Star Wars is among the most entertaining and enjoyable series out there. It combines the great feel of mythology and fantasy, with the aspects of high tech scifi stuff. Its like Lord of the Rings with lasers. Its that combination of scifi and fantasy that makes Star Wars so great, its really different and its not just everyday technobabble, in fact the lack of technobabble is one of the cool parts of Star Wars.
When i first saw Star Wars, it was when they rereleased it in theatres and my mom, who saw it the first time and was a fan, took me to see it. I didnt like Scifi at the time, but i've been a scifi fan ever since. It had a huge impact on me.

Likewise. Seeing that on the big screen when I was 10 is what hooked me... and then seeing all the rebel troops aiming at one door and me thinking omg who could get through that? Stormtroopers, that's who.
And yes also Darth Vader with his understatedess (the Original I mean of course). In TESB where he's shot at by Han, and calmly blocks them with his hand, TK's the gun out of Hans hand and still calmly says "We would be honoured, if you would join us" Too cool.
And then finally the Emperor was pretty cool too... as Luke with all his training etc and surviving fights with Darth thinks he's a Jedi, and thus hot shit... then the Emperor explains to him that he doesn't even understand the meaning of the word powerful.. and explains it with force lightning (which again in the OT was unique to him).
Even today being somewhat of a megalomaniac I occassionally daydream of being Emperor

The epic feel and of course the huge space battles and ships.

ESB - the revealing of the Executor:
Seeing the fleet of Imperators thinking 'they're them big ships from the first movie. Cool there's heaps of them.' Cue Executor 'Damm! That's friggin huge!'

For me its always been about the epic space battles. There's nothing better than seeing a mile long warship explode, with scores of other mile long warships duking it out and hundreds of starfighters flying every which way.

As I like to say: "Come for the ISD overflight sequence, stay for the epic scope!"

I like Star Wars for the sheer scale. No other sci-fi or fantasy (save Lord of the Rings and maybe some battles from Babylon 5) have come close to the huge armies and fleets that Star Wars brought to the table. Imperial walkers on Hoth was the best ground battle ever. Although I am tempted to commit blasphemy and say the gunships on Genosis may have topped them for sheer
factor.

As a kid I loved monsters, still do, though not to the fanatical degree as back then. I liked well done puppetry and costumes that made the creatures look real, so that was what really appealed to me about ROTJ the most.
I loved sword play of course, so that's in there too. I guess creatures and sword fighting. Combine that with the sci fi environment and you've got a winner as far as I'm concerned. And yes, the great special effects are key here, because everything "seemed to real" at least in ROTJ watching it on the big screen to a kid age 5/6.
And yes, I'm talking mostly about the movies here, especially the classic trilogy. For the classic trilogy there's also a huge nostalgia factor (especially for Jedi). I can recognize the movies for their contributions to cinema and pop culture of course (I got bored sitting through ANH as a child, but I love it now), and there's the humor in the cheesy acting and dialouge. Pointing out differences between the classic movies and prequels is also something of a fun pasttime for laughs. But those are just icing on the cake.

The huge amount of material, I guess. I liked the movies as a kid, but the EU pulled me in.

You mean you liked the EU, or it was like a endless morass of mediocrity sucking you down, down, down, into the cold depths of obsession?

The Jedi, Force and last but not least, lightsabres.

Space battles between starships and ground battles with laser guns (and lightsabers!). I've never been able to decide whether I like RotJ or ESB better. Which is more awesome? Epic space battle with giant warships, or epic ground battle with giant warmachines?
Hell, I place AotC above ANH because I happen to really like the Battle of Geonosis. Well, and the fact that AotC is the funniest of the six movies. Yes, I know I'm a dirty heretic, you can all go fuck yourselves.

Shut the fuck up Stark.
Evidently, the EU didn't run over his dog, as I can only assume it did yours.

Besides seconding a lot of what's already been said, one aspect of the films that really drew me in was the musical scoring. The OT was my first encounter with a grandiose full-orchestra score that gave a real punch to what was unfolding on screen, and it was something I couldn't resist.

The pretty movie, the intresting story. The action. What can I say, I'm a very easy guy to please.

yes, some of us like the EU.
