Lightsabre and a Jedi

I was reading the Why don't Jedi carry guns thread, and I just thought to post this,in case anyone else hasn't.

The samurai warriors of Japan refused to carry firearms, despite the fact that Japan,at one point in the world had the largest arsenal in the world. It was believed that firearms were demeaning, detracted from the emotions of killing(with the inherent deductions in honour and stuff) and subtracted power from the warrior,as any peasant can now kill a samurai.

So,I submit that the Jedi do not use weapons for some of the reasons samurai do not.Its obvious that like the sword, the ligthsabre is a symbol of a Jedi, with its inherent nobility and power. However,a gun, would be more for commoners, someone without the skills and martial prowress of a samurai/Jedi.And some may even believe that using a blaster subtracts from the honour, skill and nobility of being a Jedi Knight.

It would probably be a very important factor, but also don't forget that lightsabres, unlike swords, can also deflect blaster shots back to the assaliant aswell  . Oh and I don't believe I have ever said this to you, but welcome to SD.net :D !

You said it before. And its interesting considering that I registered before you.

Oh well,Basic Training and course training means I had no time to be online, and what time I have is devoted to pursuit of fun rather than arguing.Hmmm, not that coming back isn't fun.

I posted this thread more as a response to those who say that guns are so uber that Jedi should carry them.Culture and Honour can mean a lot to warrior mystics.

A factor may also be that a lightsabre is seen as a passive weapon, as opposed to an active weapon, such as a blaster. Also Obi-Wan percives blasters as clumsy and random, prehaps all jedi believed this?

Clumsy and random, which was exactly what the Japanese samurai gave as an excuse about firearms, not as elegant as a nice Katana.

Of course, one really really shouldn't forget the real reason behind the dislike of firearms. They allowed barely trained peasantry to kill highly trained, elite, noble, samurai.

Quite so. And there, your analogy doesn't match, since a blaster doesn't really give you the power to kill a Jedi the way a firearm would a Samurai.
