Sectors

In SW terminology, are Sectors a set unit of measurement (ie x-amount of lightyears cubed), or are they different depending on the area of space within its boarders? Like would the Coruscant system be considered its own sector due to its own sheer importance and population size?

Does it matter? It could be either. It could be both. It could vary depending on which part of the galaxy you're in.

A sector is a political unit. It is composed of several "member worlds" which have representatives in the Republic Senate and other, newer, colonies and uncharted settlements. I believe that the galaxy was split into Sectors when the Republic was founded. Thus Outer Rim sectors encompase a larger physical area than core sectors.

The best collection of sector names comes from the Star Wars Rebellion game, although some of the system/sector relationships don't match other EU sources. (since the EU doesn't even agree with itself, that's only a minor problem)

Ah, thanks. Just what I was looking for.

In the EU, a sector is made up of about 50 inhabitable worlds, near the Core. Towards the Outer Rim, this became a much looser definition, and there are sectors with several times that number of planets.

The definition of sectors and regions, as given by the Imperial Sourcebook, Second Edition, in Chapter One -- A Primer on Imperial Power:
A sector is an economic and political division which originated in the early days of the Old Republic. Originally a cluster of star systems with approximately 50 inhabited planets, the definition of a sector became vague and the average sector grew in size during the latter days of the Republic. Now unimaginably large sectors contain vast numbers of inhabited worlds with no regard to limiting factors. Sectors are governed by Moffs.

Sectors are grouped together into larger territorial entities called regions. The Empire has countless regions, which can contain from as few as three to upwards of thousands of sectors. The establishment of a region depends not only upon galactic geography, but also upon wealth, influence, historic "sentimentalities," economic diversity and the level of direct control exerted by the Empire. Regions are governed by Grand Moffs (the title "regional governor" is commonly used). Some well known regions include the Outer Rim Territories (a vast expanse of space with many frontier colonies), the Galactic Core (historic "birthplace" of the Republic, containing Coruscant, the capital of the Empire, as well as several other vital systems), the Deep Core (a restricted area of space -- essentially a giant "preserve" in the heart of the Empire), the Colonies, and the Inner Rim.

It's where the Emperor keeps his goodies.

I believe in the SWEGTP, it was mentioned that since the density of stars created a lot of mass shadows, and people thought it was almost impossible to find a hyperspace route in, so it went unexplored for a long time. That's probably why the Empire keeps it's goodies there.

The Deep Core isn't just where the Emperor kept his private storehouses, but is an extremely difficult area of space to navigate until Palpatine through some method discovered routes trhough. Those routes were one of the most closely guarded secrets of the Empire when it still held territory in those regions and was not revealed until Han and Leia collaborated with the Empire in the last NJO book.

Just curious though, does anyone know how accurate the Map in SW: Rebellion is?
