As Vader said in A New hope.. Only he wasn't. He was a fully fledged Jedi Knight in EpIII. So what gives? Just poor writing or is there a canon explanation?

Anakin still considered Obi-Wan his mentor even after his ascension to knighthood. I don't really see a need for further explanation. It's like Obi-Wan considering Yoda his master, despite the fact that Yoda only trained him when he was a youngling; I imagine he still looked up to him.

In Sith He was just freshly graduated as a Knight, Early at that. When he is put on the council, its not long after his graduation which might explain his not getting the title of Master.

In many ways he at this point is still the Apprentice of Obi Wan and not fully trained in all the ways of the force.

Also in Sith he was but a learner of the ways of the Dark Side.

So in ANH he is calling himself a master kind of snubbing his nose at not being given the title all that time before(after all he is the only Jedi counsilman left)

That, and it could be read metaphorically, as in, he was still a learner, since he got his ass kicked on Mustafar.

This is probably close to the truth of it. I think he was telling Obi that if he thought that Anakin was hard to beat 20 years ago, now he was truely versed in the Force (read; Darkside).

Even in ANH, Obi-Wan referred to Vader as "a young Jedi...who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil."

In the novelization of RotS has Anakin calling Obi-Wan Master, I believe at one point Obi-Wan half-jokingly tells him he is no longer his Master, call me Obi-Wan. I believe Anakin persists anyway.

You know i always get the feeling that Anakin and Obi-Wan were brothers in the sense that they would always be able to forgive each other. When Obi-Wan leaves Anakin to die, Obi-Wan looks very distraught and Anakin kinda seemed like he was waiting for ObiWan to help before he started walking away.
I mean if Anakin really hated Obi-Wan for this then he would have hunted him down to the edge of the galaxy. Through the few Purge comics it seems Anakin gave up after about 2 years

As for the learner part in the Purge comic Anakin wants to know if Obi-Wan will be at the Jedi meeting and when he gets there and no Obi he was upset that he would be fighting a bunch of losers

Why is this 'poor' writing? He was being figurative. Vader shit-talks Obi-wan and references their last battle where Vader got schooled; even if he was technically a Jedi Knight at that point and technically no longer Obi-wan's student, the fact he lost so completely, in such a humiliating fashion, probably made him feel like he had much to learn.

But wasn't Obi-Wan a Jedi Master in the RotS? Since Anakin raves that it is an insult that he got put on the council and did not get promoted to Jedi Master, and he was the first Jedi this had happened to; it sort of implies that Obi-Wan is a Master because he is on the council.
If this was the case, then Obi-Wan still out-ranked Anakin and the Master-Learner thing still sort of makes sense.

Vader says "When I left you, I was but a learner". Story-wise, this most likely encompasses when he turned to the Dark Side, became a Sith, slaughtered Jedi, but still couldn't best his old master in combat. Really, guys, it's not that complicated. He acknowledges that, at the time, he still had a lot to learn, Sith or not.

That's kind of how I feel about it. Obi-wan taught Anakin one final lesson before leaving him to die on Mustafar.
