Karen Traviss' Bloodlines

Post by Mange »

The Official Site has posted an interview and an excerpt from Legacy of the Force #2: Bloodlines by Karen Traviss. I couldn't bear to read the interview (but I noticed that she only referred to her journalist origins three times) so I skipped it and read the excerpt. I found the dialogue to be extremely stale with lines such as "[about how long Boba Fett has to live] Don't guess. I deal in facts." Boba Fett is on Kamino in the excerpt and is told that he is dying, that the medication no longer is controlling his liver function and that he is suffering from tissue degeneration. Here we have a society with an advance medical knowledge which can blend humanoids with technology (Grievous, Vader etc.), but they can't do anything about a liver?

So I assume the Kamioan's who originally cloned him and the clones for the republic can't clone him a new liver?

Not to forget, that as per Medstar there were replacement-organs for the clones en masse.

Didn't Boba Fett already have a cloned leg, too?

That was decades after his life on Kamino. Basically the story that has Boba Fett needing a cloned leg has it so his experience in the Sarlacc tore up his body something fierce (understandable) to the point where he was having chronic medical problems related to it 10-15 years down the road.

I still check her blog once in a while. Yep, she's STILL harping on the select few negative fans she can count on one hand...

No, the data on the Jango cloning project was stolen. Despite the fact Boba was unaltered, apparently there is somethign special in that info they need.

I think the real-world-problem would now be, that Boba's DNA is as old as himself -> ~70 years. Not a good starting point to clone an organ.

Pfft, I'm not gonna buy it anyway, even if that hack wasn't the one who wrote it. I don't know why anyone's interested in EU that deals with Star Wars 40 years after Episode IV, it strikes me as really depressing. 70 year old Boba Fett- Gods, let it die.

I missed that. I did notice however that she again referred to Bryan Lambert as "excellent" the other day.

Aside from the Boba Fett blah, she did make an interesting point in the "Getting into Jacen's Head" section:
Karen Traviss wrote:How does a clever, morally aware man go down the path that Jacen does? By self-delusion and self- justification. Jacen already has a high opinion of his powers and judgment, and that's not misplaced: the man is good at his work. But he just disconnects from the outside world once too often and starts to see himself as having this mission to save the galaxy, and only he can do it...you watch the drift from good intentions to what he sees as necessary evils to all-out self-justification.

So Dr. Phil here basically took Anakin Skywalker's story and plastered Jacen's name on it, then patted herself on the back for her insight into the character? Yeah...

Well, yes :D , although that description does, to a large extent, describe Jacen, who's basically separating himself from his fellow Jedi and pursuing Sith arts in order to save the galaxy.

My only hope is that she doesn't waste too much time on the Boba Fett tangent. It just seems pointless to bring him and the Mandalorians up in the middle of a story about the rebirth of the Sith and a potential civil war, especially when he's just rallying the troops so he can get himself a new organic liver.

The woman (if you can call her that judging by some of the images i've seen), created a Mandalorian language, has Boba Fett on the cover of her book, and we're already seeing references to Kamino in the book and you're hoping she won't spend too much time on it?

Although to be fair, I thought the same as you until she decided to come out with "Odds".

Is that the same language that somebody mentioned earlier as consisting of adding "o'a" to the end of everything? What a waste.

Like I said, the whole "Fett and the Mandalorians" tangent just seems entirely pointless. I could see Fett woven into the greater story, but from the excerpts, Fett has organized this entire group just so he can catch the Kaminoan and get himself a new liver. Why include this in the book at all, rather than just writing a separate one and putting more in about the actually important characters on both sides of the budding civil war?

Considering that LFL apparently didn't see a problem with the above, maybe it's not that bad, and Fett doesn't take up too much space.

Heres a couple of fun ones:

Boba Fett has never had his helmet off in public view in his entire adult life. Guess he's so hardcore he doesn't eat.

Boba Fett believe he is a household name and that he is one of the richest people in the galaxy - note that the book earlier had Cal Omas, Chief of State of the GA described ad being able to walk down the street without being recognized. I guess Boba is that famous, huh? Also, I hope I don't need to point out the idiocy of thinking that his fortune could comapre to say, the head of KDY.

Despite bieng so rich, Boba felt 3 million credits was a lot of money

3 million credits is more then a planetary government can afford

To be fair, Tales of Jabba's Palace has him sipping drinks through a straw so he doesn't have to remove his helmet in public.

So he's going to die because they can only clone a *poor* replacement? How does that make sense? Even assuming the magictech of Star Wars (what happened to bacta, anyway) can't tweak the organ while it's growing.

Its over a page long. Han and Leia pick up the Coruscant nav beacon (those things they haven't used in over 4000 years) 750,000 km out. Banter back and forth for over a page, drop out of hyperspace 500,000 km out.

Other things of note:

The Falcon starts to crash land on Coruscant of its own accord. I guess that there is no one to cal in an emergency on one of the most populous planets in the galaxy.

The water supply for half the planet can be poisoned. I guess they don't filter their water at pumping stations in star wars.

Its a horrible tragedy every time a few hundred people die. this is Coruscant. Evne if we say its population is only 1 trillion, thousands are going to die in crime every night.

Boba Fett doesn't use acceleration compenasots whe he takes off. I guess he's just so damn hardcore he can withstand 2 thousnad Gs. That or this ignorant bitch can't be bothered to read anything and this is like the incredibly small clone numbers of the close in 6 MT airstrike.

Christ, is she writing about Boba Fett or Chuck Norris?

Incidently, when Fett got a bad leg, why didn't he simply get a mechanical one? He's never seemed so short of credits that he can't afford the repairs to one, and as far as we know, he doesn't have some kind of cyborg taboo. Continuing on that leaf, although I know that the liver is mindbogglingly complex, isn't it conceivable that the SW galaxy might have thought of something either organic/mechanical or purely mechanical that could do at least some of the vital liver functions?

Traviss never fails to produce startlingly idiotic plot points. But of course, she's a journalist so she can't be wrong, right?

Well Bill O'Reilly is a fucking journalist too, Karen. And he's both stupid and dishonest. Just like you.

He did. He had one in tales of the Bounty Hunters and the NEGtC. She decided to retcon it so he could go back to kamino and we could deal with all that.

Because Karen Traviss is a shitty author that doesn't know jack and crap about Star Wars, just don't tell her that or you're TEH EVAL TALIFAN.

LFL also approved KJAs books, The first few books in the NJO, Children of the Jedi, and Episode I. Also that duddy new comic series. Just because its official, doesn't mean its any good.

I feel dirty for buying KT's first two books but hopefully with my own personal boycott of the "Legacy" comics and books I think I'll feel better about myself in no time.

Well, to be fair, Traviss is only writing a few of the books in the LoTF series. Maybe Allston will ignore the Fett tangent in his next book. I DO genuinely want to see where this series leads, so, if need be, I'll skip the Fett sections.
