New OT DVD images. Case, booklet and DVD art.

Here.

I will say, I think that they look awesome.

It tickles me that the two pictures in one of the accompanying booklet are of the (arguably) two most controversial changes. :P

That's just a style thing. Low number of colors in any given area, you'll notice. There's no green anywhere in the image.

Oh. I didn't notice actually - I thought it was one of the 'changes' Gandalf mentioned. :?

No, the booklet has pictures of Han sitting opposite Greedo, and Anakin's ghost as portrayed by Sebastian Shaw.

It should've been blue in the first place. The idea that it wouldn't show up well in the desert background was moronic.

I agree. Doesn't look so bad to me.

Consider SFX technology back then. I presume that they saw how the 1983 blue lightsabre looked on Tatooine and didn't go for it, that's all.

I'm actually glad, I think the green sabre looks great in the movie.

I'm not going to bother wasting any more money on this shit. Mike made a few DVDs of the originals a few years back that look just fine.

This is Star Wars, and what do we get? Nothing but this shit. If they wanted to impress the hell out of me, they'd make a DVD set that rivals the "Alien" DVD boxed set. It would be filled with rare BTS photos and video, it would have commentaries with the main cast, (Are you telling me Hamill is "too busy" to do one? Even fuckin' Ford isn't doing much these days.)

Forget it. Don't buy this crap unless you lack VHS copies of the originals.

Is it just me, or does Han's hair look really funny in the ANH box illustration?

My parents said that they will be purchasing the OT versions for my birthday. I do not see what the big deal is about Han shooting first in the enhanced editions.

It solidifies his reputation as a badass. With Greedo shooting first Han is reacting in self-defense but when Han guns down Greedo in cold blood it shows us just how hard he is.

Of course I saw it first as a child, but these days a primary 'good guy' gunning down a threat in cold blood would be an exceptional occurance. He didn't even TRY to negotiate: he played for time and blew the guy away. That's Sin City shit, not Jar-Jar Binks stuff.

That said, I'll never buy Star Wars again. Lucas can suck my dick, he's not getting any of my money. The last SW I bought was on VHS, and it's been - what - eight reissues since then? Pfffft.

What kind of wanking shit is this?

I liked the green sabre, it was a nice contrast against red; and it really did signify that luke was his own jedi now, instead of following in the footsteps of the old order.

Actually the sabre is still green, like Alan Bolte said...it was just the image had low colors, thus the color green became blue, because nothing was green in that image.

What's the beef man? Besides, I actually don't have VHS copies of the originals anymore. Hell I don't even have a copy of the SE either. The only SW films I own are TPM and AOTC - both of which were presents from my brother. Maybe this year I'll get all the films at last rather than borrow his copies.

Well, the linked page is broken, but I would point out that the "artwork" poster for ROTJ (not the one of the hands holding the lightsaber, which was all blue) showed Luke with a blue lightsaber.
fun/fantasy movies existed before the overrated Star Wars came out. What made it seem 'less dark' was the sheer goofy aspect of it: two robots modeled on Laurel & Hardy, and a smartass outlaw with bigfoot co-pilot and their hotrod pizza-shaped ship, and they were sucked aboard a giant Disco Ball. -adw1

Really it just shows that Han isn't stupid.
If some scummy bounty hunter is pointing a gun at you while saying "I'm going to kill you and drag your carcass to that fat slug for money." then it becomes a matter of survival.
Greedo shooting first makes Han look like an imbecile for waiting, and Greedo look like an incompitent for missing at that distance.

Okay, now I see the pics.

Yeah, Luke's saber was always blue in the artwork. So apparently it wasn't changed to green in the actual film until late into the game (even the trailers showed blue). I like the green, but then if it were blue in theaters back in 1983, I'd probably be saying I liked the blue best. ;)

Also: "LEGO Star Wars II video game Xbox demo and trailer"

I don't care how "awesome" this game is, that space would have been better served with something actually from the movie, like deleted scenes, or, I dunno.. an anamorphic encode!

:P Oh well... at least it's cheaper than expected. See you again in May 2007!

What is being offered are old LD transfers of the movies in 4x3 letterbox (they're not even anamorphic). A company like Lucasfilm which prides itself with quality doesn't give the original versions, the versions which the world originally fell in love with, the treatment they deserve. On top of this they refer to them as "bonus discs". How many people are going to buy them for the 2004 versions? I'm certainly not buying them (I'll certainly buy these for completion) for the 2004 editions for which I've already payed for on DVD and which also are flawed (lightsaber effects, color correction and soundtrack wise).

EDIT: I read a short comment on the unaltered versions of the movies made on the forum of the Swedish site DVDforum made by a reviewer. According to the reviewer who focused on TESB, the picture is unaccaptable, especially during the scenes which takes place on Hoth as the picture becomes grainy, there's also color bleeding, sometimes details such as hair becomes fuzzy. The reviewer gave the picture 3 or 4 out of 10 (I'm waiting for a full review on the site). In Swedish...: +http://www.dvdforum.nu/forum/index.asp? ... 6#m1478469

How were the light saber effects flawed on the 2004 releases? Also, the pictures showed on the link you provided look decent.
