Limitations of vong shields?

Post by Marko Dash »

Has anybody been able to get an upper limit on how much energy you can pour into a vong singularity before it breaches? Could it handle a super laser blast?
If a black-hawk flies over a light show and is not harmed, does that make it immune to lasers?

We know that vong shields can collapse from many torpedoes, or be overwhelmed by massive broadsides but their largest limitation is that they arn't global shields and can be tricked.

I haven't read much NJO but from everything I've heard it's safe to say a superlaser would drill right through Vong wanktech shields.

Except the navigational deflector array of a Starfleet shuttle...

Excepting coralskipper shielding, which seems to be superior to most technological shielding (even if it is fairly easy to trick or negate), dovin basal voids generated by capital ships seem quite comparable to equivalent NR and Imperial vessels. Of course, since overwhelming or tricking Vong shielding is quite simple, the actual power of their defensive arrays are rarely tested (and as such, Vong ships generally have a much lower life expectancy of their metal counterparts).

Vong shields aren't "always on" - they're a reactive defense (so its possible to also get a hit in or part of a hit before they activiate (enemy lines 2: Rebel Dream.) They're also highly localized defensees that must be aimed (hence they can be outmanuvered or "tricked" as in the stutter-fire technique) in addition to being overloaded (tiring out the dovin basal.)

As for upper limit? I think fighter Dovin basals can take one torp at most before overloading, but Dovin Basals like all devices can differe in performance according to size (remember the big moon-tratoring Dovin basal from Vector Prime?)
