Which Fighters Would you want?

Post by Darth Fanboy »

Assume you are in command of a Star Destroyer, your government has asked you to decide what fighters you want on your ship. You get 5 squadrons of space superiority fighters (such as a TIE Fighter or X-Wing) and one squadron of bombers (TIE Bomber or Y-Wing) assuming cost, and pilot skills are not factors Which would you take? (You may include EU style fighters such as E-Wings also)

I would take TIE Defenders and probably Scimitar TIE Bombers, for the Imperial designs and for their effectiveness in kicking ass.

I would want modified Defenders with LT and Scimitars with scimic(?) charges.

TIE Defenders and Missile Boats. Usually, the make-up of ISD's starfighters includes one squadron of recon fighters, which I would select TIE Phantoms to fill. The E-Wing, while an exceptional craft, does not appear to perform as well as a TIE Defender and requires unnecessary maintenance (not one of the factors you excluded).

TIE Defenders and B-wings. Missile boats may have plenty of missiles, but they only have one blaster.

TIE-Defenders and B-Wings, too.

Defenders and Missle Boats.

While Missle Boat have only one Gun, they can get in and out with minimal time and out distance their pursuers...something the B-Wing cannot.

I never liked Missle boats, they just reienforce the "fighter can take cout a capital ship" brain bug. Scimitar Tie Bombers just seem reasonable since they were designed by Imperial Bomber pilots, that might make them more satisfactory to the pilot.

Well partially but the other reason I like the Missle Boats, is much like the TIE Defender...they're shielded.

Plus while not taking out a Cap Ship(barring games) they would inflict grievous losses on Starfighter Support, given their payload of Concussion missles.

they're faster than JEsus' moped too. Divert some power from sihelds to speed and see how fast you can close the gaps between ships. I don't know how well they would performs as bombers though seeing as how they have their ordinance on top, If I had a squadron ob bobmers that I wanted ordinance dropped on (like a free falling thermal detonator for instance) I think a Scimitar could perform better.

As for Bombing...who knows...nothing has been shown or written about such...and given it's particular name, I take it because it is meant to stop starfighters...nothing about bombing runs

For Speed, the SLAM system is why I prefer the Missle Gunboat.

I tend to prefer a combination of TIE Avengers (TIE/Adv) and Assault Gunboats myself. The Avengers may not be quite as capable as the Defenders, but they seem to be much cheaper and easier to maintain. And the Assault Gunboats seem to have similar performance to X-Wings, except they have heavier warhead loadouts, stronger shields, and ion cannons. This would provide for a good offensive-defensive mixture at a reasonable cost.

With the defender around there isnt really much point in asking the question as regards superiority fighters. The Defender was meant to be an uber-fighter to wipe the floor with everything....and given equal pilot skill it will.....manouverable, tough, fast and packing more of a punch than mike tyson on a good day it has everything you could want....everything else trades off in at least one of these categories.
As far as bomber goes, it becomes a little trickier....what do you want to bomb? The obvious answer is the defenders cousin, the missile boat which is also way up there in the uber stakes. Personally though I might be tempted towards the b-wing for the usefulness of its ion cannons and very tough shields. If you arent going to want to capture freighters etc during your campaign though....you're probably better off with the missile boat. It can carry a large mixed load allowing a standoff interdiction of fighters and a good pummeling of cap ships to add to what your cap ship can do.

TIE Defenders for space superiority.

Tough choice on bombers, but: B-Wings would be my choice. The missile boat is a little one trick in my mind.

True but they didn't make the eqipment themselves, the Elite Scimitar Tie Bomber wing gave input on the Scimitar Bomber Project. I doubt the Empire would have gone through with it if it weren't a good way of helping desing the bomber.

I would choose TIE Interceptor fighters (the 4 laser ones) and TIE Bombers?

I'll probably take a squadron of B-Wings for the assault role, with a squadron of A-Wings for recon/quick-strike missions. The rest could be filled out with XJ-Wings.

Ok, here goes...

As a straight Imperial ship, here is how I would load it out.

3 squadrons of Tie-Avengers. These would be the main superiority fighters and they outclass MOST other fighters out there.
1 squadron of Tie-Defenders. These fighters are to be used against very hard targets and also quick hit and run attacks.
1 squadron of Assault Gunboats. This squadron is the heavy assault squadron. Near equal to the X-Wing in many areas but warhead capacity rivaling the B-Wing. Makes for an excelent assault fighter that can defend itself.
1 squadron of shielded 10-gun Interceptors. These fighters can act as "bait" because they might seem like the somewhat more common 4 gun interceptor, especially if they leave their shields off. But when the enemy attacks, the ambush happens

For a New Republic ship, here goes.

2 squadrons of X-Wings as superiority and assault fighters. They can be used to shred through enemy fighters or against hardened targets.
1 squadron of A-Wings. These are obviously the Interceptors and they are used to dash in and cut the heart out of the enemy bombers or take out specific targets.
1 squadron of XJ-Wings. Souped up X-Wing with increased capabilities. Makes an excelent superiority fighter as well as assault.
1 squadron of E-Wings. Decent assault capabilities, excelent fighter capabilities, good weapons loadout and shields. Makes a good strike escort fighter
1 squadron of B-Wings. Heavy assault fighters, enough said.

For a combo ship.

1 Squadron of Defenders, nuff said
1 Squadron of XJ-Wings, both assault and superiority
2 squadrons of Avengers as general superiority
1 squadron of B-Wings as heavy assault
1 squadron of Assault Gunboats as heavy assault AND strike escort

Missle boats for the big heavy hitters
B-Wings for light cap ships (ion cannons make things easy once shields are down)
Tie Defenders for dog fights and assist the B-wings with their own ion cannons.

If you mean Star Wars fighters, then TIE defenders for superiority, and Missile Boats definitely. I would never use them for close defense, I'd just deploy some seismic charges and cluster traps to remove any silly overconfident bastards with delusions of killing a Star Destoyer with a fighter squadron.

Shadow droids are cool, but you're fucked if they get shot down since they aren't replaceable. I'm tempted to switch my bombers over to Missle boats but I want a dedicated bomber for ground based targets, something I think the missle boats aren't capable of doing very well. I'm sticking with Scimitars in that respect.
