What's your favourite "tank"?

Post by Dodge »

After seeing the military technology in AotC, which I enjoyed immensely, I was wondering which tank/droid you liked the most (or hated the most).

Personally, and on the subject of technology I was most unimpressed with, I think the hailfire droid looks rather silly. The wheels look like those that might have come from a knackered out wheelchair (or a child's abused toy).

But moving onto my favourite ground-based technology, I think the SPHA-T Walker tank is the best armour.

But is there anthing else around that could be better defended against the very advanced starfighters that exist?

Actually the wheel is the best possibul shape for crossing rough terrain, the shape of WW1 British tanks was based off a squashed down wheel. The result is that nothing has ever matched there mobility.

The probules of course is making such a vehicle stable and having sufficient traction. We can't solve those problems with modern technology but the propulsion system of the Hailfire seems to overcome that by using repulsers.

Come on guys! We all know what the best "tank" is! It's the mighty symbol of the Imperial Army. It spreads fear where ever it travels. It is a mighty fortress on legs. Blistering laser cannons, impernetrable armor, troop carrying abilities, and intimidating appearance. The machine is (nearly) flawless.

It is none other than the mighty All Terrain Armored Trasnport. *cues Imperial March*

Aside fom the incredibly large targetable area, the fact that it's tall enough to be engaged from different continents, and that one whiny git with a lightaber, a thermal detonator, and a Bat-grapple can take on out?
Oh, wait a second, I Like the At-At, forget all the previous physics and combat effectiveness based rambling.

For SW I have to agree that an AT-AT working in concert with Infantry and smaller support units rules all.

Of course Out of pure sentimentality I have to say Megatron. Not the current TF: Armada Tank Megatron, but the TF: Gen II Megatron, a big green bastard, oddly enough I have the Marvel GI Joe comic where Cobra outfits megatron with the new armor and weapons.

Height is so it can have increased range for energy weapons. Lightsabers can penetrate any physical material, I doubt any other trooper would have been able to destroy that AT-AT. The tow-cable problem can be negated with proper light armor and troop support.

AT-AT. There is almost no stopping it. Fuck Isard's Revenge too. that was some fucked up shit the X-Wings were doing in order to get the shots.

Oh c'mon, they were tripping those machines with wires... The AT-AT is nicely armored, but destroying one of the legs would probably cripple the whole thing.

If you have a weapon powerful enough to do so then you could likely just blow the head off.

IF YOU CAN DAMAGE THE FUCKING LEG! Hello! Did we watch the same movie!?! The leg's took heavy aritillary fire to a KNEE joint. Stop that shit. If it wasn't for the inginuity of Luke Skywalker and the newly installed tow cables used for cargo hauling, there would've been one hell of a masacre.

I accept that the AT-AT has great terrain-covering abilities, and is (or was) a symbol of the Empire (Hold the Imperial March for now) but its weakness to tow-cable tripping is too great.

Obviously the covering of terrain is most important here, and legs (or very large wheels) are the most logical solution. That's why I like the SPHA-T. The team of clone troopers that come with it are an important addition.

Check it out: http://www.starwars.com/databank/vehicl ... index.html

Need I say more?

Now cue the Imperial March, with its associated tear-streaked patriotic cheeks, etc. etc.

Do the physics actually work for the tow cables stopping that much momentum ? Wouldn't it have been more likely that the cable would have been snappped like string? Doesn't it piss you off that the "tow-cable brainbug has infected the video games, and the only way to destroy an AT-AT in Rogue Leader was to use the tow cables, because unloading a full magazine of proton torpedos into one of the damned things had no effect?

Yes that tow cable woul be teared apart by the AT-AT's leg.

Beside that I always wodered what hold the cable on the legs. OK the harpoon gun fixed one end of the cable but the other was just simply released.

Maybe Wedge made a ligthning quick manouver and tied a knot on the wire with the speeder...

On the other hand the ATGAR P-Towers were not effective against an AT-At but they could take down an AT-ST.
So if you use the same weapons that the AT-AT has (mark II heavy blaster cannon) against another AT-AT it would probably cripple the legs.
They are not unstopable -sadly- but fortunately the rebel scum  didn't have the needed firepower.

Anyways AT-AT is the best!!!

It would have snapped if it was made of any real world material as far as I can tell, but SW is known to have superdurable materials left and right. Not to mention an average pilot would never have been able to do it in the first place. Even an exceptional pilot should have quite limited chances.

The precursor to the AT-AT in the EU was called the Juggernaut, as SirNitram mentioned.

http://www.galacticempiredatabank.com/Juggernaut.html

And the Empire made a naval version of the AT-AT, called the AT-AT Swimmer.

http://www.galacticempiredatabank.com/ATATSwimmer.html

But then again, I think Lucas wants the AT-TE to be the precursor to the AT-AT, so that might contradict the very existence of the Juggernaut.

IMO, the AT-AT would be the ultimate weapon if it had some side turrets or at least one rear turret to maximize its coverage. It wouldn't need to rely on weaker support forces then. Something I wondered about is why the Rebels never tried to target the guns themselves. If they screwed up the barrels enough, maybe they wouldn't have been able to fire on the Rebel shield generator or the snowspeeders.

My favourite "tank"??

Well, I always saw the Hailfire Droids as more like fire support vehicles than actual tanks.... and for some reason, I have problems interpretating walking vehicles as equivalents of tanks. (probably comes from Warhammer 40K, where tanks and walkers are treated as seperate types of vehicles)

I think the thing about the hailfire droids that made me dislike them was the odd orientation of the wheels. They may be effective support, but they do look like someone's old grandma's cast-off wheelchair! That's all.

AT-AT all the way. The thought of them striding ahead, shrugging off the Rebel 'artillery' blasts like nothing... mm, reminds me of a good game of TA. 8)
