I can see why leia or han would join, for political power or criminal profit, but why would luke join? the empire provides security and stability, stormtroopers are known and feared throughout the galaxy, there is peace if you dont make waves, and the economy isn't fritzing as it would during a galaxy wide civil war.

If you remeber the Rebellion to Luke was *cool thing to do as both Biggs and Wedge where people he knew who went of and joined the Rebellion


Most people had nothing to complain about it was usaly the dissfranchised that had problems, and those that suffered under the manics like Issard and Tarkin who joined the Rebellion

Uhhhh....How about a DEAD Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, all their flesh burned away for nothing......MAYBE that MIGHT have given Luke some reason to join the rebellion...

Oh and lets not forget his aunt and uncle were murdered by stormtroopers.

ah yes. an atrocity would, of course, make you more enthusiastic for fighting them, but luke hated the empire even before that. I am curious why.

Perhaps Imperial propaganda didn't have a good hold on Tatooine it's not like anyone actually cares about such a worthless system.

A Blaster just set on lower power settings

Is a cheap and effective Torture tool, You see unlike with a gun if I wanted say a .22 Rifle bullet to only do BB gun pentration besides placing a ton of card-board in front of it to slow it down I'm otherwise stuck
However on a Blaster I can cut the power down to very little and givemyself a sun-tan, A little higher and 1st Degree burns, Few more Turns 3rd Degree, One more and now its just enough I'm burning flesh to the bone but not damaging the bone like you saw with those two,
Its Torture as you shot them in the leg first, A it hurst alot. B they can't run away, Then you can Torture them veeery slowly, As in some cases you can presever the nerve endings in open air(Anyone who's had root canal knows how much Nerve endings exposed to open air hurts)
And if they don't talk? Keep buring, And burning and well you get the idea.

Stormtroopers are given thermal detonators as standard issue. That MIGHT have been the weapon, but there are also flame projectors in SW. Perhaps this group of stormtroopers was equipped with such weapons. They would cause similar injuries and collateral damage. Also, the "Burning Sands" Division seemed to have more varied weapons than many of the Empire's other forces. I think that the most likely explanation is that they were equipped with flame projectors.

To be honest, Mr. Bean, I am unsatisfied with your explanation of blaster fire. The Lars's positions seemed to indicate that they were fleeing from the damage done to their home, and the rest of the damage around the area seems to point to flame projectors, as does the condition of the bodies themselves.

I agree with you, blasters are clearly variable-yield weapons, but I do not think that that explains the kind of damage that we saw. Had the Lars family been tortured, we would not expect to find them as we did. The rest of the damage is equally inconsistent with blasters, regardless of the setting. Blasters do not burn large areas. They destroy small areas, or they cut small areas. They do not do minimal damage to large areas of houses and ground.

Remember when Luke's aunt and uncle Beru and Lars were slaughtered by the Empire, Luke wasn't exactly in the mood to support his caregivers murders. It made perfect sense for him to join the rebellion against a currupt government.

Well Luke being the kid who bows to peer presure at the drop of a hat probably hated the Empire because his friends did. The Rebellion was just that Rebelion against authority.

Obviously he did. Remember his conversation with Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi in his hut? "It's not like I like the Empire, I hate it! But there's nothing I can do about it right now." This was before their death.

I think it should be noted that many people joined the Naval Academy and then defected. This was probably possible because of the enormous amount of recruits that went through the Acadamies.
