Just a quick question... Vader's TIE

Post by Kurgan »

Did Darth Vader's TIE fighter (the one he used in ANH) have hyperdrive capabilities?

Because I was just thinking... how long did he otherwise have to sit out there in space by himself until he was picked up by an Imperial vessel (granted, he could just put out a distress call I guess).

It may have been mentioned in the novel, but it's been a long time and I don't have it with me.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah it does. So says EU sources. But even if he didn't, I'm sure he would have been able to contact someone to come pick him up. Or just fly to the nearest Imperial planet, he was in the Core Worlds area. All sorts of Imperials hanging around there, although he would have a fuel limit.

Regardless, yes the TIE Advanced has hyperdrive.

The Tie Advanced was the prototype for the TIE Interceptor and had shields and Hyperdrive. The Empire decided to eliminate the shields and the hyperdrive to make the extremely fast sublight engines more affordable.

Thanks guys, I just had another idea to after posting.. heh

Why didn't the Rebels try to capture Vader after the battle? Have some capital ship tracker him in or something. Even a pilot as good as Vader couldn't possibly take on the remaining Rebels single handed could he?

Holding the Emperor's right hand man may have been difficult, but what a feather in the cap of the Rebels!

I'd have to watch the movie again, but other than Vader, what other Imperials in the battle survived the Death Star I's destruction?

Then again, after the Death Star was blown up, the debris field may have obscured the Rebels view of the Death Star (or perhaps reinforcements were on the way and they had to flee) allowing Vader to get a safe distance away where he could put up a distress call, or search for the nearest Imp friendly planet/ship.

I don't think they noticed his one little TIE Advanced spinning out of control away from the main battle at that point. They had other worries... like the Death Star preparing to fire. Even after the battle, it's probable they just didn't consider it given that they've won a pretty good victory.

What would they have used to capture him? They had a pair of X Wings, aY wing and the Millenium Falcon left after Luke hit the vent and those were the only three Rebel ships in the area, probably running low on fuel and torpedoes.

In Shadows of the Empire Vader destroy 5 or 6 X-Wings nearly effortlessly and supposedly they were decent pilots according to Vader's force insight. The Falcon was probably the only ship that might have been able to put up a fight but the Y wing had the ion cannons. If any Y Wing pilot tried to take on Vader in his TIE they would get chewed to bits.

Putting all that aside if the Rebels somehow disabled the TIE and tried to capture Vader he would have cut them all into bits as soon as the hatch opened.

Vader's TIE Advanced x1 prototype had hyperdrive but no shields.

The later version the TIE Advanced x2 had both of them.

The TIE Avenger were derived from these crafts not the TIE Interceptors...
Interceptors were in production already at that time.

BTW I'd like to point it out that at the destruction of the Death Star at Yavin, the Rebels didn't have the slightest chance to capture Vader.

There was no craft that could even get close to him.

His craft was slightly faster than even an X-wing...not to mention his piloting skills...

And Vader could probably "cloak" himself by affecting the pilots' minds with the Force.

I think Luke would've been affected too, since he wasn't trained in the Force at that time.

The original TIE Advanced x1 had both of them like the x2 but Vader's x1 lacked the shields.

It was sacrificed for greater speed.

He really didn't needed it, he was the best pilot in the universe after all...

They probably thought he was killed in the explosion. I mean what are the odds of an unshielded fighter that;s spinning out of control surviving the explosion of the death star?

I checked the "Ask the Jedi Council" archive on starwars.com (whilst looking for ANY answer to the "age of the republic" quandry.. sadly found nothing on that one though) and found this:

http://www.starwars.com/community/askjc ... 10115.html

Which isn't too hard to imagine. ; )

Still, I guess with no cap ships (with tractor beams) its doubtful they could capture him, like you all said.

If they had, they could have tractored his ship in, and quickly zapped it with an Ion cannon to disable the systems inside. Though Vader might be able to mind trick his way through or something, before his air supply (in his suit) ran out.

Or they could have vaporized him with turbolasers. Man, the rest of the movies would be so different...

I was under the impression that Vader had an unshielded prototype.

P22 of SW:ICS

"Unlike the standard TIE's, it has both protective sheilds and hyperdrive capability. The hyperdrive capabiltiy saved Vadar after the Death Star was destroyed, enabling him to reach an Imperial outpost and begin his return to power".

At the bottom of the page:

"The X-1 is strengthed and protected by an experimental deflector sheild system. A stablising field is projected by a supermagnet at the rear of the ship, while deflector energies are deployed from forward and lateral pairs of projector bars."

Bullshit.

This is extremely odd. Where did this TIE Advanced X1 didn't have shields ridiculous claim come from?

The OT ICS says it has shields. So does EGVV. This is not subject to debate.
