Why the Emprie Uses Walkers....

The articulated leg design offers traction and stability over a wide
variety of environment types, and cannot be defeated
through anti-repulsorlift electromagnetic attacks the way
speeders can.

I would think that something with outsize wheels, or even*gasp* treads would provide similar advantages without the complexity of all those legs.

Anyone else notice that the beams coming out of those things resemble a mini-superlaser? In the past, turbolasers have had a rapid fire interupted beam, but those are a continuous beam variety. Chalk it up to "now that FX are so cool, let's do it like this" perhaps?

The beams does resemble a superlaser...but then, so do the Gunship turrets...

Personally, I don't think there's much difference between turbolasers and a superlaser. Btw, they say the same thing about the SPHA. They've got legs to walk through shields.

Dunno, all the walkers in SW seen are capable of moving through at least a few meters of water... (ref: SW:EGTV&V)

When I saw those in the cinema, I instantly thought "Dude, it's the lightning cannons from the Godzilla films..."

Perhaps a wheeled or treaded vehicle would be easier taken about ground explosives like mines or the like? The legs seem sturdier than a tread. Plus, keep in mind that the Walkers are also transport vehicles for units. The elevation keeps the armored section that contains those units away from the ground where there might be such mines, or perhaps a sieging platoon.

The height advantage of the weapons on the walkers could be another factor. They can shoot down at enemies in trenches or the like.

I seem to recall that other than fear, the walkers were also effective in moving over terrain. There was a type that had more legs, like maybe the PT, and could traverse steeper terrain's like rocky faces. Flat treads and wheels could have difficulty with this.

The Clone Wars game for Gamecube and PS2 (and XBox?) shows more Old Republic vehicles- including a hover tank design. It looks pretty cool. There is also a pretty big chicken walker design.

The walkers have legs because they are intended to emulate large beasts, which have a noticeable psychological effect on enemy soldiers.

I thought it had something to do with passing difficult terrain..... and being cheaper than repulsorlifts.

I got the impression that Clone Wars was only currently out for the PS2.. but the other versions could be on the way. Hadn't really followed it to much, but I was planning to try out that game this week. ; )

the Walker has 2 major advantages, It's fecking huge and well armed, and second it has a massive psucological effect, i remember watching ESB for the 1st time and i was open mouthed at the sight of them, the thudding of the feet.

It was not PT, that was devoped at the end of the clone wars and most were lost with the Katana fleet. The one your thinking about is a MT-AT (Mountain Terrain Assault Transport)

Yeah, that was it. It's in my Essential guide to Vehicles and Vessels. Thanks for the clarification. The PT was the shorter, stubbier walker.

holy flying fuck does anyone see those little centipede legs beneath the laser guns in the pic above? WTF?!

At first glance, they may appear to be legs. But I think what you're actually seeing is the units/Clone Troopers rushing into combat. Don't those things run on repulsors, anyway?

Just a mere illusion caused by something in the distance running infront of something colored with a different contrast.

Clone Wars for GCN was actually out before the PS2 version.
I got it in the begginning of Nov.[/i]

No they are legs. They're classafied as a Walker so that would imply legs.

No, not the regular republic walkers...The cannon turrent things in the pic above? I thought those were on repulsors?

They are legs. Not only can you deduce this from the fact that theyre all wobbly and not human shaped, but i just watched the scene and they are indeed legs. I would post a screencap but i cant get one.

Ah, I haven't watch AOTC in a few months. Sorry for the mistake, I thought those things were more like repulsorlifted turrets than another form of walker.

The game web site appears to have an ICS page for that tank. But it doesn't look like Saxton did it.

He didn't. They based it off the ICS style.
