The new "original" DVDs are NOT the originals.

I realize this is a little late to the party but I am surprised no one posted this yet. In Return of the Jedi, hologram Luke (being played to Jabba) is life size from Special Edition, not the mini size like Princess Leia was in Star Wars. It is also very obvious that the "original" song in Jabba's palace and the "original" song at the end celebration, are bad re-recordings with what sounds like different singers. (That could just be due to crappy audio though.) In Empire Strikes Back after Han is tortured by Vader and brought back in the room with Leia and Chewie he is carried not by the originall Cloud City security gaurds but by the digital stormtroopers of Special Edition.

The Songs are the only things I find truly annoying but it makes me wonder what other little things are the S.E. version. Of course this leads to the obvious question of how was this version put together, as the "we found a 1993 print" story is obviously false. That also makes the fact these aren't animorphic and "restored" video, all the more puzzling.

The two things you mentioned have been there all along. If they were changed, I have never heard about them. In any version.

Lord Insanity should change his name to Lord Amnesia.

They weren't. Both Luke's holo being lifesize and Han being carried into the cell by stormies were there in the original theatrical release. Whatever Lord Insanity is smoking Ein probably wants some of it.

Yeah, I kind of wonder how Han's arm can almost knock a digital stormtrooper's helmet off.

Methinks someone needs to recheck his VHS tapes.

Except for the moon of Tatooine in the opening shot (which appears to match the 2004's, so apparently a change made in 1993), I can't see anything that looks like it wasn't part of the originals.

Come on. Who cares about those trivialities anyway. The only important thing is:

DOES HAN SHOOT FIRST

It has been a few years since I had working copies of the "original" OT so apperently I am not remembering correctly. I would swear I saw a making of special about the changes for Special Edition that showed Luke being made life-size (as opposed to mini like Leia). I also would swear there was a few instances if Cloud City gaurds replaced with Stormtroopers. But apperently I would be wrong. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth.

There may or may not have been instances of Cloud City guards being replaced with Stormtroopers in the SE and later revisions.
The ones dragging Han back to his cell, however, have always been Stormies.

If there was, then it certainly would have been mentioned sometime in the last ten years, particularly in that shot-for-shot comparison for the trilogy that SW.com put up last month.

No such alteration ever occured.

Really? Wow, I'm sure I've seen the original moon (old VHS tapes were the way I was introduced to the trilogy, before the THX versions came out) but I certainly don't remember it! I imagine it was an awfully subtle change.

Compare the first three Star Destroyer shots with the rest on the page.

I'm guessing they recomposited the original element (or an alternate version) and came up with a different result. I brightened up my original 2004/1993 DVDs and darkened my LD copies, and it didn't end up with the same thing. Check your VHS copies, but I think the "new" moon matches the 2004 editions, but not the older ones.

Actually just several releases of only about five versions, most of which are just separated by region and overall more or less identical.

Seriously, what a waste of time and bandwidth. What the hell is up with the series of like SIX identical screenshots for one single release?

Those are the different bootleg LD -> DVD transfers that are available for people looking in less than legitimate sources, or ebay.

It's also to show people who claim two or more versions are different/same. Note the person who asked the question, in which I posted the link in response to.

Not my site, but useful for that purpose. ;)
