Just a question, are lightsabers and vibro blades effective against shields? A thought I had reading another thread.

Vibros are made to cut through metal, not energy, so I doubt it.


Lightsabers...probably depends on the strength of the shield.

The shields we see used in that "facility" (whatever it was) in TPM certainly were able to stop lightsabers (it stopped Maul's blade).

I would say even weaker shields could stop lightsabers. Otherwise, they would have engaged the destroyer droids. That scene really puzzles me. Why were they so afraid of droidekas? As soon as they saw them rolling down the halls, they should have pulled them closer or speed over to them and slice them up into bits. They waited forever for them to roll along, stop, uncurl themselves, start up their shields, and fire at them. I hope Yoda didn't know about this incident!

1) Hanging around there would mean more droidekkas would turn up.

2) Their goal was not to destroy as many droids as they could. It was to reach Naboo.

They could have ended the entire conflict by breaking into the bridge. If their only goal was to get to Naboo, they wouldn't have even tried to get into the bridge.

And they would be able to handle more droidekas if they repeated the above process. Plus, once Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan had gotten into the bridge, he could have had Nute Gunray call off all of the droids.

The more Destoryers, the more shots are needed to be blocked. Even a Jedi can be overwhelmed or worn down by having so much comming at them.


I seem to remember in the Jedi Powers game (I know games don't fall well in teh line of canon) that the lightsabers didn't work all too well against the shielded Destroyers.

Getting to the bridge to get Gunray and/or leaving the ship to warn Naboo as soon as possible seemed to be the priority. Getting tied up fighting a slew of droids would lengthen the time that Naboo wasn't warned.

Well, in Ep1 when Obi Wan and Qui Gon are fighting Darth Maul and they head into the power generation area, they get stopped by a bunch of red energy fields that the lightsabres couldn't penetrate. Maul put his sabre up against it and the sheild stopped it from going through.

Yes, however Qui-Gon was nearly finished cutting his way through the blast doors. If Obi-Wan threw his lightsaber at the Droidekas before they got a chance to uncurl or just charged at them, they would have never gotten a chance to fire at them or even deploy their shields. And if the droids wisened up and uncurled and deployed their shields before they were in Obi-Wan's range, it would have taken them a while to waddle on up to him. By the time that happened, Qui-Gon would have gotten through the door and they would have held Nute Gunray hostage.
