Alucard versus Elminster!

Post by Crom »

Alucard from the Hellsing anime series: Magically augmented super vampire wielding rifle-sized pistols and without restrictions on his abilities.

Versus ...

Elminster from the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms: Immortal super wizard. He has his pipe.

Is this before or after Elminster survives being tortured by just about every major evil being in Hell?

Let's say before. Though honestly I put them at dead even right now. I don't know much about Elminster other than he's almost unstoppable, which seems to put him on good odds with Alucard.

Elminster, when he actually fights, is damn near unstoppable. He becomes completely unstoppable when the sheer resources he's built up over 1,500 years are pulled into play(The Seven Sisters, all of which he raised, Mystra herself's favor, his status as a Chosen).

To put it bluntly, he can spit out any spell that can be imagined, improvise in the middle of battle, and, if we beleive the text of the books describing some of his battles waaaay back in Myth Drannor, withstand hits that should melt bones or shatter them, depending on if it was a spell or a strike.

Given that the old codger won't fight a straight fight(Using illusions to trick Alucard while he formulates a better strategy), Elminster will win.

Ok, Alucard vs an Elder Vampire from V:tM is a good one.

But this is just sick. Alucard is good, but he isn't that good.

Simply put Mage=Wins, Super Mage=Always Wins.

If possible let's leave out deities (who aren't Elminster) and his allies. Just Alucard and Elminster on an empty field dueling it out.

In an attempt to take up the Alucard side:

Alucard has been decapitated ... several times. So while his damage reduction may be lower than Elminster's he apparently can regenerate completely from fatal wounds.
Given that the old codger won't fight a straight fight(Using illusions to trick Alucard while he formulates a better strategy), Elminster will win.
Alucard has exhibited the ability to, for lack of a better phrase, "mind-fuck" people. I refer specifically to the episode where he was playing with the two murderer vampires.

I suspect that Alucard's immortality may force Elminster to resort to a kind of banishing at best, since we know magic can apparently restrain Alucard.

Actually, I picked Elminster specifically because I couldn't think of anyone else who could go toe-to-toe with Alucard. Perhaps I've misjudged Alucard's abilities ...

Don't get me wrong, Alucard is a powerful guy from what I've seen in the other threads. But from other threads I've seen about Elminster this guy is powerful as hell. I don't know much about them so this will probably be Conner (Who knows Alucard) and Nitram (Who knows Elminster) going at it. Though my opinion considering the power of mages in D&D is that Alucard goes down.

Perfectly understandable. I was just noting what makes him so badass isn't so much himself, but his resources.
To put it bluntly, he can spit out any spell that can be imagined, improvise in the middle of battle, and, if we beleive the text of the books describing some of his battles waaaay back in Myth Drannor, withstand hits that should melt bones or shatter them, depending on if it was a spell or a strike.

How's he fare against being Turned(IE, faith being directed against him), or his body being disintigrated? Incineration by a dozen or so fireballs at once? Large boulders being dropped on him?
Given that the old codger won't fight a straight fight(Using illusions to trick Alucard while he formulates a better strategy), Elminster will win.

Temporal Stasis to start, Alucard is locked away from Time itself for a while. Elminster casts Demiplane, forging a prison universe. Elminster casts Plane Shift on Alucard to seal him in said prison.

Sorry. Temporal Stasis and Time Stop, two spells Elminster has, are major game-breakers when ancient demons and small gods are involved.

IIRC Alucard is trapped in a human body, but even so, destruction of that body doesn't actually affect him. I doubt either incinerating his body, or crushing it, will prevent him from reappearing. Perhaps without his stylish hat, sunglasses, and jacket.

Not only that, IIRC, in the last episode Alucard took an energy blast straight on, from the mouth of a god, and remained relatively undamaged. He may be able to resist high temperature, or force.

Ah, but turning? That's a good question. How powerful a cleric is Elminster? Vampires are pretty high up on the turning table, and Alucard is an augmented vampire, who does not seem to show the usual weaknesses that most vampires exhibit. We have seen holy magic have some effect on him from the series ... (Alexander's paper magic.)
Temporal Stasis to start, Alucard is locked away from Time itself for a while. Elminster casts Demiplane, forging a prison universe. Elminster casts Plane Shift on Alucard to seal him in said prison.

No problem, I should have considered Time Stop from the beginning. The thing with a prison demiplane is that I think Alucard is an extraplanar creature. He seemed to be able to create a pocket dimension inside of himself where he toyed with two "Bonnie and Clyde"-esque vampires. That being said he might be able to escape.

The impression I'm under is that Alucard is some kind of ueber being that is forced to intereact with the world through a vampire's body. This, however, is all just speculation on my part ...

No, he's just an incredibly old Vampire. He's perhaps the oldest living Vampire in the Hellsing universe. A god he his not. At least in the anime we get hints that he thousands of years old.

Given that he can turn his whole body into a blood and also appears to be able to turn into a black mist/shadow sort of thing I don't think boulders or disintegration are going to have much effect on him.

That Turned ability might affect him some. Certainly holy articles effect lesser vampires in the Hellsing universe. But then again he's doesn't follow the rules other vampires do so it's just a possibility.

And at least to judge from the anime Alexander's little paper trick didn't matter much. He was able to regenerate and what not despite the paper trick and he didn't try anything else.
Temporal Stasis to start, Alucard is locked away from Time itself for a while. Elminster casts Demiplane, forging a prison universe. Elminster casts Plane Shift on Alucard to seal him in said prison.
That would probably work. At least for as long as it could be maintained.

In training, Elminster is passable. More to note, however, he is imbued with part of Mystra, is Midnight(Present Mystra's)'s lover, and has the sort of iron faith only over a thousand years can give you.

If the prison has no flow of time(Decided when created), he can't escape without someone else helping. Worse, if he is extraplanar, he's up against a whole slew of spells; not the least of which being Cacofiend, which would allow Elminster to simply enslave Alucard.
The impression I'm under is that Alucard is some kind of ueber being that is forced to intereact with the world through a vampire's body. This, however, is all just speculation on my part ...
As Storm points out, he's just an old vampire. Obliterating the body should handle it.

Demiplane is a permenant spell. Though, someday, in the far future, adventurers may stumble onto the prison plane, where time doesn't past, and accidentally free Alucard.

Which is that hard part. He's been reduced to goo on the floor and come back for more. And he also has the ability to turn into the black shadow/mist thing which seems to selectively interact with the physical world.

Yes, but it means anti-Undead magic and his priestly Turning will work. Moreover, Disintigrate leaves less than goo, it means dust.

For all we know that dust might well be able to regenerate.

Though the undead magic might work. The turning might but that's fifty/fifty at best.

Since I know virtually nothing about Elminster, if anyone (IE Nitram) is curious about quantification of Alucard's abilities, let me know.

Offhand, I'm not optimistic about Alucard's chances, myself.
