The "Empress of Blood" is offering the award? Interesting. For anyone who forgot; the map shown back in #698 included the Empire of Blood. Along with the Empires of Sweat and Tears.
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

So they're not necessarily evil...or even unpleasant in anything more than a professional capacity. I hope that this is resolved without them being killed, then.

As usual we list some sensible possibilities and Burlew goes for... Option C: something entirely different.

Edit: I note the wanted poster for Nale doesn't list classes or specific feats. It just says 'highly skilled with sword or magic; which for a certain value of 'highly skilled' applies equally well to Elan.

Yeah, Burlew went pretty far to ensure that the descriptions of Nale's crew applies equally here. It's rather clever.

My only complaint is that while it makes sense from a world-building perspective, it feels like yet another side-story that will dilute the narration of the main plot.

Or who knows, maybe the Empress of Blood knows the epic-level illusionist.

Betcha this ends with Elan seducing the Empress of Blood, as required. :D

I'm not sure they're really 'sensible' when it's based entirely on the idea that V was the target ... when he clearly wasn't.

Yeah but we didn't know that. It was a sensible enough assumption considering that arrow went right for him.

I wonder if the local Empires around the Desert gate are monitored by our Epic level Illusionist? That would be worth doing, since you don't want someone blundering onto it.

Unless, the Empress of Blood is under the Illusionist control, and this is all a rouse to get the Order to come to him without him being obvious about it....

New one is up.

Why is Hayley dropping a magical weapon on the ground, when anybody passing by is going to take it? Nice thinking there.

... How was this plan, better from V's point of view than Haley simply running off and telling Roy what happened?

From the brief encounter Haley had no way of knowing:

1: They were taken to the Empress of Blood
2: They were taken because Elan was mistaken for Nale

And 3, as V said it was not in the plan for Haley to be captured. She chose to do so and it was the right thing to do for RP and Narrative purposes.

Haley's "capture" splits the party more evenly. Under most circumstances you would want 4 people trying to rescue 2, but given that these are PCs 3/3 means they'll share equal narrative time, Haley will be able to keep an eye on Elan directly instead of once again being separated from her woobie, and having a rogue on the INSIDE makes escape more likely.

Maybe, maybe not. Even if they're stolen (and it's less likely than you might think for scavengers to promptly loot the crime scene of a high-level confrontation) it would be a pretty easy Streetwise/Gather Info check to find out what happened, and where several fairly powerful magic items "disappeared" to.

It looks like the dagger is pinning the note to a wall, not the ground.

Only if the last panel is needlessly rotate by 90 degrees. And if that's a wall what is that grey door like thing doing there?

You can see the sidewalk on the last panel.
But were I the DM, they would never ever find that +4 dagger again.

Are you kidding? They'll see the dagger again.

The town's wizard's guild is a bunch of low level wizards. Like Level 1 - 2. V said so herself.
The town is also a small town. Therefore, not alot of money.

No one in town can afford a +4 weapon. Except adventurers. Like say the 'rich outland adventurers' that are in town. (If they travelled from another continent, odds are people think they have money).

If the OoTS doesn't find the dagger, someone will offer to sell it to them. In fact, that will probably be the route taken. That would make for at least 3 panels of material.

I agreed with the same opinion a few posts ago. But since what Haley did was stupid, if she were a PC in a campaing where I was the DM, the party would never see the dagger again .

I do think that Solauren has a point, though - if that dagger is so high-quality that no-one in town could afford it, why wouldn't the finder try to sell it back to the rich adventurers passing through?

The dagger is meaningless without the "wanted" poster. It would have been easier for Haley to just tell the party who attacked them, and they could find they were bounty hunters, check the bounties for both Elan and V, see that there is one for Nale and go to the Empire of Blood.

Yeah....

The poster is a much better way to communicate that. Your way has a lot of "if they do this, then this, then this, then this, they'll figure it out."

Sure, if their party find it. Narrative casuality tells me they will, but still. My plan would make sure Roy & co. knew they were captured. Now only they don't, but they need to find a dagger stuck trought a poster in order to find out. Call me old-fashioned, but I find getting captured just plain retarded, due to the fact the people who got the bounty on Nale might just kill Elan when they get there.

You know, I'm not quite sure, but I think something about that last panel makes me think the Empire of Blood may not be such a nice place.

Maybe it's the slaves, I dunno.
