NOW we know where Elan got that from!

Unless the general is some sort of odd presige class of bard, that is.

Oh, and did anyone notice that the general is called Tarquin? Swap out three letters and the name does not only sound familiar but is spelled the same as one well-known character from a certain sci-fi franchise.

I guess not ALL of the bard blood came from the mother's side...though I wouldn't trust Tarquin just yet.
And yes, with the "I am your father" bit the name similarity seems a bit too convenient to be coincidental.

Lord Tyrinar, sorry, General Tarquin certainly seems to have a decent share of charisma, though he seems to use it mostly for Intimidate (as seen last strip).

I'd always assumed Elan got his attitude from his mother.... I wonder if she was more like Nale? Well, except good.

I wonder if we'll see the Evil part of his makeup*. Definately seeing the Lawful, but haven't seen much of the Evil so far.

*no, not AKON stuff from Haley.

Except for the bit where he's working for the Empire of Blood, you mean? I mean, the blood motif screams evil, and then there's that whole slavery thing going on too. And the bit where he pats the red dragon on the nose? Being on that kind of terms with a red dragon isn't the kind of thing [Good] characters get up to very often.

Well, yes, but that just shows he's working for an evil empire. You don't have to be evil to do that.
And the bit where he pats the red dragon on the nose? Being on that kind of terms with a red dragon isn't the kind of thing [Good] characters get up to very often.
He's also stopping her from eating them, and being friendly, even towards Red Dragons, isn't neccesarily an evil trait.

He's shown that he's ok with the evilness around him, but he hasn't acted in an evil fashion, yet. I'm looking for the bit where he suddenly stops being so friendly. Or orders their executions with that happy-go-lucky Elan style attitude. Or something.

That would be creeeepy. "Evil Elan" is so much creepier than Nale.

Just because you're a lawful-evil bloodthirsty monster doesn't mean you can't be cheerful, loving, and a good father.

It wouldn't surprise me if they make a systems joke on that one. The character is old enough to be 1st or 2nd edition. 1st I think could natively wear heavy armour (due to the improbably difficult dual class path they had to take from fighter), and there were kits in 2nd edition that let them do it.

It would surprise me; Burlew's said he regrets the system jokes he made early in because the jokes rapidly become dated.

Though as of OotS #001 when the versions change, the entire universe changes with it. Even if Elan's dad was 1st edition, he's not still going to be under those rules. Just like the OotS gang follow 3.5 rules in the main strip and 3.0 rules in the prequel books.

That's a very good point...though that would bode well for Elan, if true. I doubt that the Mayor would have let anything bad happen to Faith, even if his ascension had not gone out with a bang.

That's not a problem, since these monsters were specifically discontinued. There were no new rules to update them into.
So aparently, rule changes will adapt everything they can but not remove stuff that is not included in the new rules.

It seems inevitable that Haley's father must be locked up in the dungeons there. The two lover's parents having a bitter hatred of each other? It wouldn't be a proper story if they didn't.

Oh, Elans father might actually try to keep it that way - just because that's how it's supposed to be!
And after all, it will bind his son and girlfriend together, so he is only doing it for Elan!

724 is up!

Good play on the theme, and Tarquin continues to be a fairly nice guy. As it seems totally inevitable that he'll suddenly do something evil dispite his personality thus far, I almost expect the Giant to do something else; maybe he aims to be Lawful Evil for dramatic purposes, but is just too much of a nice guy to do it? Lawful Good isn't the only alignment that can be a struggle to maintain.

At least we know that Tarquin isn't putting on a show.

Proof that evil doesn't mean unpleasant (if he IS evil)...and I do hope that the lizardman gets a recurring role! He's too good to go away. :D

#725 up; "The Significantly-More-Secret Origin of Tarquin and Nale".
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers
