I think they made a live action Dragonball movie based on the early manga once.... it was hilariously terrible. You can find clips on youtube if you look hard enough.

The proper name was Dragonball: The Magic Begins. Of course it was unlicensed so they had to change a number of the names and terms. And yes, it was truly awful.

If they are going to go through with it, at least don't change the intro song.

CHA-LA, HEAD, CHA-LA!

DBZ's time has already passed. Even Toriyama didn't want to work on DBZ GT if I recall correctly.

I believe a case can be made for ABBA accomplishing that particular feat...

ABBA don't count. They were hot and talented before Eurovision (the girls, at least).

How much of the movie will be them powering up?

Maybe that's how they'll handle the opening credits. Imagine, the opening bit with Goku and Vegita and the rest all powering up. Then an hour and a half of them fighting. Super Saiyan style, of course (and Vegita screaming "OVER NINE THOUSAAAND!!!" at some point). That would be worth the watch. Screw the story!

So, as with the episodes, the first half is powering up/taunting and the second half a preview of the sequel.

Part of DBZ's problem, is it was made almost parallel to the manga, so they had to stall for weeks between most major plot points. (If you can call most anything in that show a plot point...)

The other half was, as the main characters became even more ridiculously powerful, the villains had to be even more over that point... Leading to a vicious cycle... Especially with Goku dieing and being brought back some fifty odd times...

It's a cycle seen somewhat in Dragon Ball too... But there at least the secondary characters were worth a little more than "hey, let's throw ourselves in the enemy's way so we can die and fuel Goku's rage!" fodder... (And the fights had more animation on average than three frames repeated for minutes on end...)

Though, I gotta agree, it has the potential to spark a million more /b/ 9000 pictures...

Why does that always happen? It happened with Full Metal Panic! and Hellsing and now Naruto. Can't they wait or go at a slower pace? These animation studios can't write for shit.

Part of it is because these titles are popular, so studios want to cash in. But the Author doesn't want to write a second story line, and neither the Author or Publisher wants the show to tell the comic's story before the comic gets around to it.

The other part is, that no matter how much the fan-base in foreign countries wants to trump it up, this is still a product of a nations mass entertainment media. As such, they need something to fill their air time with, therefore popular titles get picked up fairly quickly.

(And if you want draw out... look at bloody Inu Yasha... That show... I don't think it's ever going to end. EVER. It just prints money for the Author...)

Although, Fullmetal Panic! as far as I've seen of the anime (Season 1 + Fumofu) it pretty much exactly mirrors the Manga that I've read of it, albeit with the comical chapters split off mostly into Fumofu.

Hellsing, what I saw of it (the old 13 ep season) was a semi-original storyline from the manga (got all the issues currently released in NA) and as such, I don't think it has too much filler...

But Naruto is DBZ with ninjas... so it's to be expected. :P Besides, it's really aimed at an even younger demographic than DBZ was.

Inuyasha is best described as DBZ for girls. And your Naruto assessment was fairly accurate too. ;)

The show ended a while ago. The manga's still going strong, though.

As far as I'm aware, Full Metal Panic! never actually had this problem. The novels that each series were based on were written long before Gonzo/KyoAni started production. Novel adaptions, such as FMP!, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi or Shakugan no Shana tend to work better, simply because they tend to be completely finished at release, as opposed to continued on a monthly basis.

However, Hellsing was really a case of Gonzo dropping the ball, as per usual.

However, Naruto suffers from the fact that it is a popular, on-going shounen series; it's the same with One Piece and Bleach. These are series with no end in sight (quite literally, in the case of One Piece - it could go on for another ten years and not look 'forced'). Manga adaptions can work, though obviously not while the mangaka is in the process of writing it.

I'm fairly sure that Rumiko Takahashi will be writing the same core "will they, won't they" plot she's been doing since about 1978 from beyond the grave.

If you're referring to the piece of crap Dragonball movie (as opposed to any of the animated ones), this one is actually going to be official. Which means it may or may not suck even more.

So long as they stick to the Japanese voice overs, I am probably fine with it.

I have never quite followed the series much, though I followed other Japanese anime back then. A quick check indicated there were several animated movies released in Japan back in the 1990s and the one I watched was one of those. Curious that it was English dubbed though.

Edit: Apparently the movies were done in the late 80s.

Yeah, this is an actual live action movie as opposed to yet another animated one. Helps to read the actual article. Most anime that gets shown on US tv tends to be dubbed in English, though.
