Japanese or English?
....
Japanese VA for Ed was Aoi Tada, while Mayumi Shintani was Haruko.
English VA for Ed was Melissa Charles (also credited as Melissa Fahn), while Kari Wahlgren did Haruko.
At least, IIRC, Haruko is Weird Alien Biker Chick...

English, are Haruko and Ed the same Va? sure sounds like it.

Muchos Gracias, the similarity wasn;t there this epsode but Haruko's opening lines in the first Episode had me doing a double take.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Nope. I checked. They just probably sound similar enough.

Speaking of VAs, is it just me or do the English VAs for Zenigata (Lupin III) and Nicholas D. Wolfwood (Trigun) sound like the same guy? And Jet sounds similar to Jigen...

Which Lupin? because Funimation got a hold of some of the movies and Pioneer has been releasing episodes of the TV show (the stuff on Adult Swim)Dalton wrote:Speaking of VAs, is it just me or do the English VAs for Zenigata (Lupin III) and Nicholas D. Zenigata and Wolfwood? Dont think so, but its possible if the VA has good range. Jet and Jigen though, nah I dont think so.

Pioneer's release. The one on Adult Swim.Darth Fanboy wrote:Which Lupin? because Funimation got a hold of some of the movies and Pioneer has been releasing episodes of the TV show (the stuff on Adult Swim)
I'd look this up on IMDb if they didn't have a tendency for pseudonyms.Darth Fanboy wrote:Zenigata and Wolfwood? Dont think so, but its possible if the VA has good range. Jet and Jigen though, nah I dont think so.

No, I don't think so. Jet's VA is very distinctive, and one can usually recognize him instantly regardless of the role he's playing (he was the narrator for "Outlaw Star" and is also 005 on "Cyobrg 009").Dalton wrote:And Jet sounds similar to Jigen...
Just so you know, the "009" end credits say his name is David Umansky, but it might be a pseudonym.

Did they ever eplain how he is able to spontanously generate matter inside of his skull?
I must admit, the art was really good and after ep. 2, I kinda get what is going on. The show does make me laugh.

Sort of. They eventually have like two or three technobabble sentences to explain it.

Plot really starts getting thick at the end of episode 4. Then 5 and 6 really hand it to you.Admiral Johnason wrote:Did they ever eplain how he is able to spontanously generate matter inside of his skull?

Anyway, about the head:
SPOILER:
It's called something like a "NO channel". Basically Naota's head is like a receiving area for a wormhole or hyperspace-like thing to connect to. Someone or something triggers the event and something gets sent from one place all the way through wormhole-like FTL into Naota's head where it then emerges as the object requested.
MASSIVE SPOILERS:
In Medical Mechanica's case, they use Naota as an NO receiving end to send their various robots to destroy Earth.
For Haruko, I believe she triggered Naota's NO channel to release Atomsk--who doesn't come out immediately but resides inside either Canti or Naota until the very end of the series.
Also, Haruko can trigger NO channels in other people, like that Amaro guy, or whoever the weird eyebrows guy is called. She does this to summon that slingshot-like thing

Typical Johnason behavior, piss everyone off and then later get into the thread again and kiss ass to make up for it.Admiral Johnason wrote:Did they ever eplain how he is able to spontanously generate matter inside of his skull?

In many respects, this anime is really not all that insane. Its just that they took very normal (for anime) themes and "Insanitized" them. rather than, say, having the main character unconsciously summon a giant robot, climb inside a cockpit, and battle it out with the random alien robot of the week while having wierd sexually-connotated-but-not-really relationships with some girls around him (i.e., another Evangelion rip-off) they just twisted it around. So now, the robots come out of him and all.
Its not really as innovative an idea as it sounds; Excel Saga had a much more original premise, although it didn't present itself as insane as FLCL. The FLCL writers struck me as writing and drawing random crap for no reason and with no logic simply because they could, not because it really helped the story out.
Ehhh... I give it 3/5.
For reference,
I give Excel Saga, Hellsing, and Cowboy Bebop 5/5.
I give Rune Soldier, Outlaw Star, The Slayers, and Trigun 4/5
I give Those who Hunt Elves and Love Hina and Dragonball Z 3/5
I other words 3/5 is enjoyable, light hearted fluff, fun in itself but not too heavy. Deep relaxation material.

Now that I see this thing more, it seems like a Japanese version of Looney Tunes. Almost all the other anime is like Japanese versions of American action type shows/comics/movies. This is like a Japanese version of the crazy things that happen in the other type of American cartoons except with the standard Japanese Anime things substituted for what is used in American things.
my heart is a shell of depleted uranium
Personally, I find that there is real content within FLCL. Stuff like life, childhood/adulthood, etc.
They just bury it under so much insanity you have to look deep to see it.
It's like this:
Many anime have moments of silence or such where they try to convey some sort of dramatic or philosophical moment to the audience. However, some overdo it and are criticized for trying to force it.
FLCL goes the opposite direction and does the best it can to seem as silly and unserious as possible. No moments of silence. No "dramatic moments".

I'm quite interested in the series, but I'm not to happy that I'll have to buy three DVDs for six episodes...
Especially considering that ADV was able to do Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, with six episodes on one disc...

I dropped 80 big ones on this series (I got the Collector's Box). Very uncool. For 20 bucks more I can buy Eva, which is over four times as long.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:I'm quite interested in the series, but I'm not to happy that I'll have to buy three DVDs for six episodes...

I'm not complaining about the length of FLCL, I'm complaining about the fact that you have to buy three DVDs for only [/i]six[/i] episodes, at two per disc. To me that's nuts, and is just the distributor ripping the money right out of the customers' wallets.
One volume should have been enough for the series. My only guess is that they were copying the Japanese release (which as you know aren't very economical).

On a similar note, I hate it when a series like Trigun gets to a pretty serious and deep moment (like near the end of episode 25) and totally RUINS it with a bunch of super-deformed giant face and streaming tears crap. I absolutely hate that.Shinova wrote:It's like this:

YOu know buying Three DVDs wouldnt even be such a bad thing but paying $20-$30 PER dvd is what pisses me off.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:I'm not complaining about the length of FLCL, I'm complaining about the fact that you have to buy three DVDs for only [/i]six[/i] episodes, at two per disc. I wish DVD companies would follow the Outlaw Star Example and do a 3 disc set with 8-9 episodes apiece.

I still prefer the American system to what they have in Japan, where one or two episode releases aren't uncommon. But I still wish it was a little more economical.
