Honestly, I can't take people seriously when they say how all dubs suck and all the originals are great. I saw the original Knight Sabers, for gods sake.
Most American anime fans aren't even qualified to judge the voice acting in subs, given that they don't speak Japanese.
I don't mind people who prefer subs, I just can't stand elitist fanboys who look down on anyone who dares to enjoy anime dubbed in his or her own language.

I'm not anti-dub, period, and I take offence at your accusation, Nitram.
There are a lot of dubs that I like. Coyboy Bebop has an almost impossibly good dub. I've liked Outlaw Star's, Princess Mononoke's, Mobile Suit Gundam's, G Gundam's, both of Akira's (despite how inaccurate the original was), Tenchi Muyo!'s (which excelled in acting quality, I thought), and others. Hell, I even kind of liked the dub for the later seasons of Dragon Ball Z...
But there are also some dubs that I don't like. Eva's is quite poor, with so-so acting and miscast roles. Love Hina's is simply atrocious: like they didn't even care. Most are average in quality compared to the original Japanese, and it's actually been a while that I've watched a full episode on DVD of something in English. I just watch the Japanese with English subtitles because that's what I prefer to watch.
I'm obviously not some kind of elitist prick with insanely high standards when the provided subtitles are good enough for me...

And what am I to presume when someone leaps up, offended that I speak out against those who worship the original and shit on everything else? Rumours of my telepathic abilities have been greatly exaggeratted. But frankly I don't care.

Spanky was completely justified in taking offense. If you had simply singled out those who watch only subbed anime and look down on anything dubbed, it would have been fine, but you condemned everyone who watches subs with this statement.

I don't like a lot of dubbed anime mostly because the timing or the tone are often just...off, or the words are rushed, or there are uncomfortable gaps. It doesn't "sound" right to me. Which is why I prefer to watch subtitled anime, except in the rare case where the dub was nearly perfect. Bebop and Spirited Away come to mind.

Haven't seen it. I've heard some good things about it, but then again I'd heard good things about a lot of other things that ended up sucking.

Even if we don't speak the language, it's still quite possible to detect the inflections and emotions that seperate good acting from bad.

I suspect, thogh, that people tend to put in what they want to hear. Emoting is easy, but good actig is another. I don't the current crop is any worse than the original dubs. ADV, in particular, is great.
My biggest problem with japanese dubs: their men's voices sound like crap. I have no idea that they do, but most all their voices are wierd and out of place. Its especially true of
My 2nd biggest problem: I read very quikly, but I find I'm not really paying attention to the action when I watch the sub. I miss so much, and the heart of anime is the, well, the animation.
My biggest problem with english dubs: quiet girls. Why the bloody hell must every quiet girl be completely unintelligable?!?!?! Noir, Evangelion, etc. I cannot understand a single word some of them say. In Noir I had to turn on the sub just to hear what was going on!

Do you even watch dubs nowadays? Seriously? This is not ten years ago, where subs were a superior way of watching anime simply by virtue of virtually all English voice acting being horrible. These days, it's uncommon to get a truly bad dub, with most dubs being at least passable, many of them being quite good, and a couple of them being wonderful (Bebop and FLCL, for example).
Even if we don't speak the language, it's still quite possible to detect the inflections and emotions that seperate good acting from bad.
Wrong. Unless you speak and understand the language and understand the nuances that make good acting in the language, you are not capable of judging the quality of foreign voice acting. Especially a language as foreign to English as Japanese.

No, see, I'm OPEN-MINDED, unlike you. I realize that it's possible to enjoy anime both in it's original language and in my native language. Perhaps if you would actually try and watch some decent dubs you would realize that as well.

It was only a couple of years ago that I decided on my "subs only rule," and I still watch dubs from time to time, or try to, at least. I usually can't sit through the entire length.

I've been trying to find a decent dub for years. I've come to the sad conclusion that it's likely that they simply don't exist. And I'm not going to force myself to watch movies I don't enjoy just so that I can appear to be "open-minded."

It's rather simple. Listen to both actors. It's rather easy to tell who does a better job.
Case in point: Neon Genesis Evangelion. Anyone who says that Spike Spencer is a better actor than Megumi Ogata has serious issues.

With all due respect, that's not true. Just because you can tell what shitty English voice acting is doesn't make you capable of judging Japanese voice acting. It's true that you can gauge emotional expression, but that's about it. Unless you speak Japanese and understand it, you can't judge the other aspects of acting, such as nuance, pronunciation, enunciation, timing, and articulation of words.

Since this has pretty much offically been hijacked, I gotta add my two cents.
Elitist Otaku fanboy mentality is the worst thing for anime, in my opinion. Now, I can usually tell good japanese acting from bad, and I will say, many times the japanese voices are better, simply because there is a bigger pool of people. But, I like understanding what the people say without reading, and am too lazy to learn japanese, so, why the fuck not watch the dub. Some dubs actually improve the show, if for certain minor reasons. Case in point, Crest/banner of the stars. The dubbing is attrocious, forced and unemotional. It is also the main appeal to me. It makes the show go from second rate space opera, to hilariously cheesy space opera. Or take tiffany Grant as asuka. Now, Spanky will kill me, but, her voice matches a lot better than the japanese voice actresses. Sorry. But she sounds right.
Now, after that rambling, let me get to my point. The elitists have this real "it can't be americanized at all" attitude, when the fact is, most anime nowdays is designed to be released in america, or to filter over through the internet anyways. The rabid protests over dubbing slights makes them look like idiots, not true fans. Real fans like the product, but have no qualms over the fact that it will be reproduced, sometimes even crappily. They don't violently attack any slight they see. They accept it, and look forward to when better product will return.

I disagree. Grant sounds ten years too old for Asuka. And Allison Keith sounds ten years too young for Misato. In my opinion, they should have maybe switched roles.
Same thing with Gendo and Fuyutsuki, actually. One sounds too old and the other's too young.

I perfer my Akira Kurasawa films must be subtitled, and I watch them 3 or 4 times each.. However with Hyperkenetic shows I perfer the dubbing if the intent is kept accurate. With Kurasawa there's a lot to absorb.... Same with the guy who did Spirited Away and Princess Monoki.

yeah, but in anime most of the voice actors do this, too. I can't recall hw many times I've seen a 14-year old high schooler with a THROATY JAPANESE BASS.

Live action's different. I would never watch a live action dub in a million years, regardless of how good the voice acting is.
