That makes an interesting thought: imagine if the movie had been based on the typical D&D game. With the group I played with, that would have meant the party holding out for more money, then looting every place we went, then squabbling over the loot, then arguing whether to throw in with the evil wizard or use the wand for their own reign of terror, while one of the group went into the local villages with a battleax demanding 1/3rd of their crops and another poisoned their wells for no good reason.

Bah, Chaotic evil is boring, anyone can do chaotic evil.

Trying to play it Lawful evil is so much more fun. Especially when you get to be the power crazed noble plotting to overthrow the king...

Having a few of them in the party is useful, though: It would keep everyone's attention elsewhere while I was doing other things...

Adding in some botches(And the vastly improbably clamaity that they represent) would have improved the film.

You could argue that someone botched their film-making roll...

If a typical D&D group from my friends was used for the movie, everyone would be wondering why the rest didn't kill me. I liked torturing townsfolk boys for spells, often was nude, tortured an unconcious ally for spells, drank myself unconcious for three days, demanded shares of the loot that were no use to me, but great for others, and never let us avoid monsters. You'll be happy to hear that I was killed when a demon of some sort ignited 300 aqabus rounds and killed our entire party.

I haven't seen it - but I do wonder why they didn't base it upon an existing D&D setting (eg. Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms) instead of inventing a new one. It's not as if there aren't enough of them.

Except... it's about as canon as my undershorts.
Granted, but it does conform to most of the worst D&D stereotypes. Dungeons that only exist to present an obstacle, horrible anachronisms, strained attempts at being PC that fail miserably... the list is long and distinguished.

Makes me wonder, too. Given that a lot of books can sell just by the campaign setting's brand name, it's inconcievable that someone would just decide to throw away that in favor of the kingdom of Izthatzo.
