For those of you who've seen Gundam X, how does it compare to Wing? I've watched the Gundam Wing series but haven't seen X yet and my friend tells me it's a helluva lot better.

Your friend is right, GX is much better than Wing and completely without the sheer looniness of G Gundam.

X is better, but still has faults, mostly the Frost Brothers. Also as it was cancelled, don't expect a great ending.

G remains my favourite AU series

From what I've heard, X is alright. It's just that it was murdered in the ratings due to a bad early Saturday morning timeslot. Some say that Eva crushed it in the ratings battle, but as far as I can tell, that's totally false, as Gundam X premiered about a month after Eva concluded.

Correct.

Eva ran from Oct 1995 to March 1996, while X ran from April to Dec 1996.

Yeah, Wing was my first Gundam too, and I still have a soft spot for it.

But if you like Heero, check out Full Metal Panic. I swear Sosuke Sagara looks just like Heero would in about four years, even though they're supposed to be roughly the same age.

Also as it was cancelled, don't expect a great ending.

Imho X ending is still several times better than Wing and Wing Endless Waltz endings.
From the last 10 or so epsiodes it appears the director and his staff knew X was going cancelled very soon and did everything to tie up loose ends and give X a good proper ending instead of a quasi(sp)-"to-be-continued" bullshit ending.

G remains my favourite AU series

That's because when anime series are cancelled, they're often given an advance notice so the studio can finish up the series with a reduced number remaining episodes.
