Okay, this is going to be awesome. Especially when V gets back to the group.

This is making me wonder how much time has actually passed between "Now." and the current strip. An awful lot has happened in not very many strips.Ahriman238 wrote:Okay, this is going to be awesome. Especially when V gets back to the group.

Re: The OotS Thread III
Apparently, according to my reading of the rules, Durkula can still heal just fine, but he can no longer spontaneously abort a prepared spell slot into a heal as he could when he was Good-aligned.
Re: The OotS Thread III
Yep.
Non-Evil Clerics typically don't prepare Cure-spells, instead they prep other spells and convert them to Cure-spells as needed. So Durkon is trying to do the same as always, but gets a Wound-spell instead.
Furthermore, his spells were most likely converted to mirror-versions (where applicable) when he was turned, which might have affected any Cure-spells he did have prepared.

Re: The OotS Thread III
So, if I understand correctly, a Good-aligned cleric can convert any prepared spell slot to a "cure..." spell of the appropriate level, and an Evil-aligned cleric can convert any prepared spell to an "inflict..." spell of the appropriate level, but in each case, not the converse. So, Good-aligned clerics will prepare "inflict..." spells and convert on the fly if they need to heal, and Evil-aligned clerics prepare "cure..." spells and convert on the fly if they need to harm.
What about neutral clerics? Can they convert in either direction? Or none?

They have to pick one when they first become a cleric, and stick with it.Terralthra wrote:What about neutral clerics? Can they convert in either direction? Or none?

Re: The OotS Thread III
Evil clerics (even undead ones) can still cast cure spells, they just can't channel positive energy or convert to healing on the fly.

Yes, that's exactly what a couple people just said.CaptainChewbacca wrote:Evil clerics (even undead ones) can still cast cure spells, they just can't channel positive energy or convert to healing on the fly.
Re: The OotS Thread III
Converting other spells to cure spells "on the fly" does incur a casting time penalty, so many clerics will prepare cure spells to avoid having the spell interrupted by something (if the DM actually enforces the rule, that is).

Where is that rule? Can't seem to find it in the 3.5 rules.Ted C wrote:Converting other spells to cure spells "on the fly" does incur a casting time penalty, so many clerics will prepare cure spells to avoid having the spell interrupted by something (if the DM actually enforces the rule, that is).

That's only when applying metamagic IIRC.Ted C wrote:Converting other spells to cure spells "on the fly" does incur a casting time penalty, so many clerics will prepare cure spells to avoid having the spell interrupted by something (if the DM actually enforces the rule, that is).
Re: The OotS Thread III
And then only for Sorcerers and other "spontaneous spellcasters", not even to Clerics, Wizards & Co using spontenous converts.

Re: The OotS Thread III
It would probably have to be in some splatbook somewhere, or only apply to metamagic. I just checked the SRD, and the only rules I found regarding spontaneous casting was that Good clerics/Neutral clerics that worship Good deities can spontaneously cast cure, Evil clerics/Neutral clerics that worship Evil deities can spontaneously cast inflict, Neutral clerics that worship Neutral deities pick one at character creation, and that whether you cast cure or inflict also determines whether you turn or rebuke undead.
Re: The OotS Thread III
I could have sworn I remembered that rule too. It's not in the SRD or Player's Handbook though; I checked.
My guess is that it's from 3.0, but I don't have the 3.0 corebooks handy to check.

Re: The OotS Thread III
I actually have an old 3.0 Player's Handbook. No mention of that particular rule there, either. The only extra text in that section of my handbook are rules for specific deities for the base D&D settings (Eberron, I think) who are technically Neutral but only allow cure or inflict casting.
If it's not one of the splatbooks, maybe it's in the DMG.

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

Re: The OotS Thread III
I'd disagree. The Order has been up shit creek for awhile now- V is still missing, they still have the threat of Tarquin somewhere nearby, Xykon is off to the last gate, and they're busted up bad. Even the tiniest sliver of hope is gonna get jumped at hard. They don't have the time, energy, or resources to:
A. Fight Durkula.
B. Get his body to a cleric somewhere (that's even assuming they won).
C. Pay for a resurrection.
Besides which, remember that OotS is always written with one foot firmly grounded in the metagame. And in metagame terms I can attest that this is pretty much exactly the reaction when a PC gets wrecked by an undead or lycanthrope and then comes back with the player still in control.
"So, you're still playing him?"
"Yeah, I'm just evil now."
"You're not gonna screw the party over are you?"
"Nah, I'll take it out on NPCs or something when your guy's not looking."
Seriously, evil characters can get away with a ridiculous amount of stuff as long as they promise not to steal from the party members or otherwise harm them.

Re: The OotS Thread III
It's also easier, if Durkon's willing to play along, to bring him along as a party member until they find a cleric who can perform the resurrection, then kill him.
