Montreal gets a big-budget boom with three movie shoots

BRENDAN KELLY
The Gazette

Saturday, September 01, 2007

The 20th Century Fox studio is expected to shoot three big-budget movies in Montreal over the next year; each has a budget of at least $100 million. The films are the Night at the Museum sequel Another Night, Independence Day director Roland Emmerich's remake of the sci-fi flick Fantastic Voyage and a big-screen adaptation of the Japanese manga Dragonball Z.

Another Night is the follow-up to the family film directed by former Montrealer Shawn Levy, which grossed $250 million at the North American box office last year. Like the first film, the sequel will once again be set at New York's Museum of Natural History and will feature many of the same characters, including the nightwatchman played by Ben Stiller. Robin Williams, who played Theodore Roosevelt, is also expected to be back.

It is not known if Levy will direct Another Night. The screenplay was penned by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, the creators of Reno 911! and the screenwriters behind Balls of Fury.

The ironic twist for Montreal is that the first Night at the Museum was set to shoot here, and local crews had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars building sets at Mel's Cité du Cinéma studios. But the shoot was moved to Vancouver at the last minute to accommodate Stiller's schedule.

Emmerich, who shot the 2004 weather-gone-wacko epic The Day After Tomorrow in Montreal, will be back in town for Fantastic Voyage, an update of the 1966 film that starred Raquel Welch. It is about a scientist who is dying of a blood disorder. A group of his colleagues attempt to save him by being shrunk down, put in a miniature ship and injected into his bloodstream.

Emmerich's own company, Centropolis Entertainment, will be producing in partnership with James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment. Emmerich tried to make this film 10 years ago, but it didn't come to fruition.

Dragonball Z is adapted from the manga created by Akira Toriyama; the work was also turned into a Japanese anime series that played all over the world. It tells the story of an alien sent to destroy Earth, who has a change of heart and decides to join the humans in their fight against various aliens and bad guys.

There are no details yet as to when these three shoots will begin, but they are expected to wrap production by next July.

IGN is also saying that the DBZ movie will be live-action.
DragonBall Z: We're often asked about the status of this highly anticipated project, but there simply hasn't been any hard news on it in ages. 20th Century Fox was reportedly looking at turning the Kiji Anime series into a live-action feature several years ago. Prior to that, screenwriter Tedi Sarafian (Terminator 3) and director Roland Emmerich were both linked with the project at various points. One hopeful sign: LiveActionAnime.org points out that "the live action DBZ movie (http://www.dragonballz-movie.com) was updated and extended from March 25, 2007 to March 25, 2008."
I wonder how badly this will flop.

Oh wow, this may be as bad as the G-Savior Movie, and that was bad enough. If they do this though, I want to see the Over 9000 scene.

This is scary. Will it be over 9,000 though?

And another sequel and remake. How unsurprising. I trust Emmerich's 10,000 B.C. will make up for him remaking Fantastic Voyage, which we got a good enough pseudo-remake with Innerspace.

I think we have all had more than enough DBZ after it practically took over the Toonami lineup on Cartoon Network for a time.

Three hundred million dollars for this idiocy? I hope they all flop and it buries Fox.

NO. Bay is to be giving us Nimitz goodness for TF2. Assign a Uwe Boll to this and see it sink the studio. You can ask for no less.

This is the funniest & most pathetic thing I've read all day. If it were any studio other than Fox I'd probably feel bad, but since it's Fox I'm just going to laugh at their stupidity.

Dude, this has been in the works for YEARS!

I remember back when it was first announced, back when I was still into DBZ (I know, I know,) and then it went into development hell.

I guess they finally decided to do something with the license.

A live-action Dragonball Z movie? It's bad enough as a cartoon show (although the manga is manageable); I don't know how I sat through the shows I managed to catch as a kid.

As far as http://www.dragonballz-movie.com, is IGN sure they extended it? It's not loading for me.

I can see it now for the DBZ movie. 90 minutes of emo introspective monologuing and glowing while flexing.
May you live in interesting times.

There are plenty of DBZ fanboys who are convinced that this is going to be the next Star Wars.

I know this would be fighting bad with very bad and dated.

I am so sick of DBZ I just want to do a Fist of the Northstar crossover, which ends with "Your Already Dead"

You know what would be really funny? If this turned out to be awesome. Not just, 'hey, these fight scenes are awesome'* but rather 'this is a film classic. Oh god'. It seems implausible, but I'd laugh pretty hard.

*Awesome fight scenes do actually happen in Dragon Ball Z. Well, there waso ne which I thought was pretty cool, though for the most part they were lame.

If they can approach the number of gigantic mushroom clouds seen in the anime, it'll be worth watching.

At the very least, I'm hoping the fight scenes will be decently choreographed.

Of course, it could very easily turn into "It's so bad it's good" territory. Or it could just be "It's so bad it's bad." Honestly, we still have no idea who is going to sink his carrie...I mean, direct.

More importantly, I wonder who will act. Back when it was first announced so many years ago, they were looking at Hugh Jackman for Goku, but IIRC, he got into a contract dispute, and that's why it never really went anywhere.
