Just saw it on Sci Fi last night
Suppose instead of the burly Vikings and Antonio Banderas arriving by longboat to save the kingdom from the weird bear-dudes, it is the Fellowship of the Ring right after they leave Rivendell. Frodo doesn't have the One Ring and Gandalf has limited use of his powers as he did in the story.
Can the Nine do just as good, or better then the Thirteen?

'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

Yes. The Fellowship would have done a far quicker job of it.
Legolas' skill with arrows out-matched the Archer on the Roof (forget his name), so having the Wendel/Grendel climb up on the roof would have just meant a momentary pause as Legolas killed them.
Gandalf. heh... He'd have the Wendel, with only a simple firework display. The Wendel like to pretend they're a firewyrm? Give them the one from the Birthday Party to play with.
Gimli. 1.......2..............3.............4.......5...6...7.......8.....9.......
Boromir: Hell the man took 2 arrows and was STILL FIGHTING!! All because he knew he had to protect the halflings! Now, give him some helpless women and children that can't lift a weapon, and see what heroic lengths he'd be capable of!
Merry, Pippin, Frodo, Sam: They'd be causing havoc, darting here and there, but I don't know how much good they'd do. They'd be the ones closest to taking the place of Banderos' character... a hero in spite of themselves.
Aragorn: Beowulf was a Hero-Prince. Aragorn would take Beowulf's place in all the fights... but the Wendel Mother-priest's little poison would not have killed him. Aragorn is a healer, as well as a warrior. By the time the Wendel attacked again, Aragorn would have found a healing herb and cured himself of the worst of the effects.

Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.
