Boogiepop Phantom...?

Post by Spanky The Dolphin »

Yesterday at Best Buy I saw two copies of the very rare (~2000 made, IIRC) Ultra Edition box sets for the anime Boogiepop Phantom.

Now, the DVD-phile in me says to grab one of those bad boys as soon as I can, but at $80 and due to a slow rate of collecting money, I'm a little wary of just buying a DVD I'm not sure that I'll like (do not suggest renting it, no one near carries it and I don't do internet rentals).

So, basically, is BP worth getting?

Well, tough decision. If you absolutely do not want to part with your money unless you're absolutely sure you'll like it don't. What you may want to do, however, is buy the box set, watch it to determine whether you like it or not, and if it turns out you like it, great. If not, then you can just sell it on eBay or Half.com for probably at least face value (80 bucks seems like a pretty good deal for a limited edition box set to me).

This actually sounds like something I would be interested it (I've never seen it either, but if it's like Lain it'd be right up my alley). Too bad I'm a cheap bastard.

They've been showing it on Anime Unleashed on TechTV. It didn't particularly strike my fancy and I'm not very interested in watching it. You should find out more about it before you blow $80 on it.

By the by, any chance of them reprinting the Bebop Perfect Sessions set?

Doubt it. The Perfect Sessions were a limited edition numbered box set, so I don't see them reprinting them ever again.

Concerning Lain: I really liked it overall. While I thought it was a little pretentious at times, and wasn't so much a fan of the limited Korean-based animation quality, I thought it was really good.

I'll read a few reviews of BP to see if I'll actually like it.

Boogie Pop Phantom is COMPLETELY fucked up. More mind-bending than Evangelion and Lain combined IMO.

That might be because it sucks and I tried to understand it or it might be good, as I only saw the first few episodes... And dubbed ones at that which make me even more dubious.

Well, I read a few reviews over at Anime on DVD (actually stopped reading after a certain point 'cause I didn't want to know more), and frankly it sounds right up my alley.

While I didn't find Lain to be great enough to own, I like how BP appears to be constructed.

I need more dark anime in my collection, anyway. :)

I thought NGE was pretty damn dark. (Not as if I'd seen it, just from what I've heard)

Lain is very dark from a certain point of view.

And X? That movie gave me depression.

Lain's a personal favorite of mine. I own it. It's not one of those series that you can watch over and over again, though.

If you want more dark anime, pick up Witch Hunter Robin in October. Very dark setting, I love the character designs.

I don't see Eva as being very dark at all, personally. Especially considering the first half of the series.

I'm also sort of looking forward to Witch Hunter Robin...

It's a good one. I wish I hadn't watched the fansubs, in hindsight, since I'll see those wild plot twists coming when I watch it again.

Boogiepop is rather dark, and is very slow. I own 3 DVDs, and unlike my transformers collection I can barely sit down and watch 3 episodes let alone watch the series in a single sitting. It is however good, just don't expect to have a party.

Another good, fairly dark series is Berserk. I watched all 26 episodes in one night.

I was unfortunatly forced to watch BP in three sittings over the course ofsix months, so I had forgotten a few things by the time the end came around. However, it seemed like everything fit into place at the end, and the way it all wrapped together was really intriguing. I didn't like Lain that much, despite being a member of the outer circle of the Knights of the Eastern*coughLambdacough* calculus myself.

The first volume of the manga is coming out in two months as well, albeit at a hefty price tag. It looks like a worthy purchase.
