The Real Ghostbusters: A Match for Freddy And Jason?

Post by Andrew Joshua Talon »

This just came to me.

Our motely band of supernatural superstars drives the venerable Ecto-1 to a scenic lake lake. The Fab Four themselves emerge, Egon running the PKE meter over the grounds, Peter looking about in a vaguely bored fashion, Ray asking Egon about the readings he's getting while Slimer looks over his shoulder with a slight bit of drool from his mouth (he hadn't finished his tenth pizza when they left for the call), and Winston is surveying the area, his thrower at the ready.

From the shadows, on both sides of the lake, two different evils peer out at their visitors. They'd finished their killings for the night, but what was four more bodies made cold to them.

Freddy grins wickedly, licking his claws in anticipation. Jason runs his hand long his machete. Both are ready, both smell blood...

How would the episode progress? I mean, besides Jason and Freddy immediately being reduced to free radicals by the Ghosterbuster's proton packs? Well, Jason at least. For all his strength, I don't think he'd take a stream of hyper-accelerate particles lightly. As for Freddy, his domain is nightmares and bringing fears to life. How mortal IS he?

Let the episode commence! (hums the Ghostbuster's theme song)

Cyclops: Oh yeah? Prove it!
Wolverine: ... You're a dick.
Cyclops: ... Okay then...

Well, if those "unlicensed nuclear accellerators" work, we could have a burning jason running round, not entirely useful i would've thought. If they're out in the open they've got some range on him though, and they could also cross the streams (although that might screw up our universe royally, as it only really blew up the gozer side of the gateway, as i understand it) and hope for the best.

Alternative spray him with "love slime"( ) and see what that does. They might just survive if they don't sin earlier on in the episode.

Could he hold up the statue of liberty? Maybe some convulted plot device akin to that could be used somewhere...

As for freddy...i have no idea.

Well, in the cartoon they took on Cthulhu and lived, I think that they can handle Freddy and Jason if they can handle Cthulhu...

I've seen that episode, and they were VERY lucky. Plus, the whole "drives everyone insane" bit wasn't in effect, as the Ghostbusters were standing fairly nearby his location and didn't go totally nucking futs.

Well, by RPG mechanics the Ghostbusters would be verging on the insane anyway because of all the shit they've been in, but due to the generally successful resolutions of events they'd have recovered lots of sanity. And its a 1d10/1d100 sanity loss for seeing Cthulhu, so they might have just gotten lucky. Or used to it.

Maybe Slimer is really a priest of the Old Ones who was only able to manifest itself partially, and so the Ghostbusters have built up a sort of immunity to the psychological effects such a being?

Don't cross the streams Rye, that would be bad.
The ghostbuster have everything required to take down freddy and jason. They got a nerd, a loser, a cool guy, and a token black guy, as well as a lovable sidekick, a secretary, a bumbling accountant, mood slime, an awesome vehicle, and the biggest and best nuclear accelerators on the market.
How can they not win?

I remember an episode where a bunch of ghosts got their proton packs and were shooting at them. Winston asked Egon what would happen if a beam hit them; Egon said it would, in effect, vaporize them.

Freddy and Jason would be rent to particles.

By canon, the Real Ghostbusters can't be truly harmed by ghosts, demons and monsters. Only ridiculed and mocked and that sort of stuff. And scary stuff only makes them scream and make a funny face, with no permanent effect, so they're somehow used to insanity - in fact, in their show INSANITY = COMIC RELIEF. Well actually EVERYTHING = COMIC RELIEF. But yeah they've taken on Cthulhu, the Sandman, some greek god, Zuul, and a lot of scary stuff, so that should give them at least an upper limit.

And Egon's technobabble powers are more powerful than Geordi's & Data's combined, plus somehow he manages all his nonsense actually sound believable and like something that could work ;)

What does 1d10/1d100 mean?

It refers to sanity rolls in the RPG Call of Cthulhu. Characters have Sanity Points, and when they see something outside of the paradigm of the ordinary or something particularly horrifying, they have to make a sanity roll. If they make the roll, they rationalize it somehow, like swamp gas refracting light from Venus off a whether balloon when, in fact, they saw a star vampire. If they fail, they lose sanity points and roll to see how many sanity points they lose. If they lose all their marbles, they are totally fucking nuts and are useless (thus out of the game).

One thing that should be noted is that that applies to everyday people. An investigator (who are the characters that people generally play) is a normal person of the 1920s and would be really suprised to find themselves confronting a ghost or Elder Thing, which is outside their flawed view of reality and thus would force them to make a sanity roll. People who's world view heavily includes the supernatural, such as the Ghostbusters, would be much better equipped to wrap their minds around the existance of such things and thus wouldn't have their sanity knocked so hard, if at all (after all, the Ghostbusters handled Gozer well enough, who is arguably a Great Old One). It's very possible that the Ghostbusters view of reality such that Cthulhu would have been scary and unexpected, but not outside the realm of existance.

In Call of Cthulhu RPG, when you see some Ancient Evil of the Eder Days That Should Not Be, cast a magic spell, or experience other weird supernatural events, you slowly go insane. Resolving supernmatural conflicts or rest and go for a while without seeing such things restores sanity. Also, you can become immune to a certain kind of horrible madness-inducing sight by seeing it enough.

Cthulhu will not uncommonly inspire complete madness in any ordinary person who sees him.

I already knew most of that. What I really wanted to know was what those specific numbers meant.
