Slayers vs ?

Post by DPDarkPrimus »

Having just finished the entire series of Slayers, I wonder... what fantasy worlds are capable of taking on a band of adventurers the likes of Zelgadis, Lina, Gourry, and Amelia?

As the owner of the set that DP watched, I'll say that Slayers is both very good and very funny. :)

Its a slapstick humorfest, set in a fantasy world. Like all the best anime-humor-fantasy stuff, although the humor is there, you get a lot of serious moments, too. Its light-hearted, but there are some pretty impressive things.

Incidents involve the apparent annihilation of large sections of cities (we are talking something like the use of a MOAB here) and disintegration of enormous dragons (Size somewhat unknown. They have the animation scaling problem). But raw power is not always the most accurate descirption of magic used. A couple of spells seem to deliver less energy - or even no actual energy, simply use the force of cosmic birth and death - but are superior for the purpose of killing anything you can hit it with, even across super-spatial boundaries (i.e., it can hit things on the ethereal/astral plane).

One of the most unusual effects of Slayers is the Humor-Survival Quotient and the Coolness Survival Quotient. In other words, The funnier or cooler you are, the more likely you are to survive. Major villains never go down except by a huge, epic battle with awesome spells being flung around, and never before. Some comic-relief bandits, however, can survive spells that blow away dragons with a single shot. It makes no sense at all, but it very fun to watch.

Since you're leaving out Naga, Xellos, Filia, and the Monstrous Zamalguster... :-)

Well, lets start with the Black Company. I don't think that there's anything in that universe to match the destructive power of the Dragon Slave, or kill Lina before the can cast it, or resist it...well, maybe the Dominator, but he really doesn't seem much more powerful than a demon noble, and they've taken out those together; though with a lot of difficulty.

Wheel of time? I'm pretty sure that Rand with the uber ter'angreal could waste the entire group. Come to that, I'm pretty sure he could waste Shabranigdo, not just a fragment of him. And those could destroying attacks mentioned in the fight at the end of tSR could probably get anything hiding in the astral. And people in the WoT know how to teleport, while in the Slayers universe humans don't seem to be able to do that (OK, Rezzo did once, but that part of the anime wasn't in the books (I'm pretty sure) the anime was based on, and you'd think that One of our heros could do it if it was possible in the Slayers universe).

Dragerea of the Vlad Taltos books? It seems to be on the same general level of power as the Slayers universe, and I think that an emporer or empress willing to use the Orb in battle could probably crush them, and the great weapon wielders would probably win against the slayers. That, and Zellas would probably develop a case of hero worship upon meeting Morrolan. Come to think of it, a Slayers/Vlad Taltos fanfic sounds like a really good idea...

Yeah, the sword of light might, possibly, be able to stop a balefire beam...but I really doubt it.

Dragon-Half and gang would put up a pretty good fight.

I mean you have the "hero" who has sword well and truly embedded in his head and then is back the next episode because his brain is so small that it was unaffected by the sword blow.

Maybe Chtulhu is the "Lord of Nightmares" she calls upon to cast Giga Slave.

Ah, Slayers. :D

While not the "best" anime I have ever seen, it is still my favorite (if that makes sense). Something about that combination of silly humor moments and serious, dire moments. I'd have to say that Slayers Next (the second season)is my favorite of the three. Anyone else have a different preference?

Actually, if we're going Slayers/Lovecraft parallels, I'd say LoN would be more the equivalent of Azathoth.

Chthulhu, much as I love the guy, just isn't in the ballpark of the LoN. I mean, the big C isn't even absolute master of one universe, let alone four. How can he compete. Now, I'm sure hes just as powerful as Philbrizzo or Gav, for example, and a whole lot more alien, but don't try to compare him to the gold on the sea of darkness.

The Lord of Nightmares would probably be a match for Azathoth, and probably would win that fight. Azathoth, for all its cosmic power, is a big puddle of flesh. The Lord of Nightmares seems to transcend existence as we understand it.
