Post by Hamel »

Yui probably had conciousness and crontrol over the EVA, because in episode one, it saves Shinji from falling debris. Fast forward to the ingestion of the S2 engine. WTF? This either suggests that Yui went completely animal on us, or she didn't actually have control over EVA 01.

I'd like to know what gives here.

Protecting you offspring certainly is an animal instinct. No contradiction there.
In my talons, I shape clay, crafting life forms as I please. If I wish, I can smash it all. Around me is a burgeoning empire of steel. From my throne room, lines of power careen into the skies of Earth. My whims will become lightning bolts that raze the mounds of humanity. Out of chaos, they will run and whimper, praying for me to end their tedious anarchy. I am drunk with this vision. God: the title suits me well.

Ok, but the EVA devoured part of the angel after it was no longer a threat. Then it starts howling.

Meh, maybe she loses some of her higher mental functions when she's really pissed off.

Hmm... this is strictly down to interpretation here, and I have no way of proving it, but couldn't it be possible that in the Eva universe a soul isn't necessarily the same as a mind?

What I mean is that while the Eva may have Yui's soul and animal instincts (e.g. the instinct to protect her child.)it's quite possible that her personality/memories and sentience in general went with her physical brain?

*Shrug* As far as I recall, her mind is still in there (ie. Unit 01)... At least, that's the impression that I get from "End of Evangelion" (and some episodes from the series, IIRC, though the details are a little vague).

But right after that, Shinji goes and and gets his ass kicked by Sachiel, until EVA-01 goes berserk. If Yui had complete control over the Eva, she probably wouldn't have let that happen, she would have killed Sachiel without much fuss.

I DID watch more than two episodes of the damned show, up to roughly the
point where they're playing hopscotch on the decks of aircraft carriers
and DDGs.

And rather than starting a new thread, I'll just ask here: What exactly was Yui trying to do, anyway? She had the backing of SEELE; was she trying to initiate the Third Impact according to their wishes? Or did she just want to build an Eva unit to defend against the Angels and keep a permanent record of human history?

Also, what was Gendo trying to do? I get the impression that he didn't want to kill all of humanity via the Third Impact ("Death creates nothing."), he just wanted to reunite with Yui. How would he have done this?

I have watched the show severial times trying to answer those questions. All I was able to come up with is that its bad for mental health to watch the entire run of the show at once on a regular basis,,,,, and a headache.

From what I recall, the three Reis although sharing one soul didn't seem to have the memories of the others. (Episode 23 - Rei III didn't recall what happened to Rei II, and said it's probably because she's the third.) So, I don't think the soul is quite the same thing as the mind here, or at least memories, although some attachments may still exist such as Rei III looking at Gendo's glasses and her decision in the End of Evangelion.

In addition, you may note that perception is distorted during the 'weird times' in the EVA, particularly when it's bezerk, although during other times as well, this being NGE we're talking about. Note that when Shinji was absorbed by EVA-01 during episodes 19 and 20 he was in a extremely bizaare 'dream-like' state for the whole time, nearly a month. Given that the extraction procedure used on him was originally designed for Yui, I'd say that her state is probably something very similar. Yui, having a task inside/being EVA-01, decided to stay. However, this does probably mean that Yui was in a similar state as Shinji and could not accurately make any sense of the outside world, except maybe on an iniutive sense, thus making the children nessary as the eyes, ears, and probably the feelers of pain for the EVAs.

As for what Yui doing, I think she was trying to make a monument that would last even when the rest of the universe went cold. (EoE)

Yui's soul basically belongs to EVA-01 (and so does Kyoko's to EVA-02). In time of need, the Eva will go berserk and act independently, and in other times of need, their souls will manifest small aspects or inklings of their former selves. I think it has to do with context of the situation: protection versus comfort, maybe.

And of course with the bindings off, an Eva will act totally independently.

Shep: Shut the fuck up. You've only seen about the first six to seven episodes period. There is no way you could have any idea whatsoever how the series or its themes actually are...

Durran: Yes, Yui's personal goal in the E Project was to make an eternal icon for the Human race; that even after five billion years, there would be evidence that Man existed at all, even after the death of the Solar System.

Gendo would have reunited with Yui by istigating Third Impact, but on a much smaller scale. With him merged with Rei, and the souls of Adam and Lilith inside her, he would have been the only person effected. SEELE found this out when he betrayed them in EoE, so they began their assault to stop him and proceed as they planned (or at least at first with an improvised version, which they abandoned as soon as the Lance returned).

Oh excuse me, Mr. "I watch EoE once a week". I'd say watching a show to roughtly halfway through it's run is enough to form a good idea of the
series.

Taking time out from rectally pleasuring yourself with your cranium might have allowed you to concentrate more no teh story. And if you do manage to take your head out of your ass for five seconds, try sticking it someplace where it might be wanted (like say, Darkstar's ass. I'm sure you and he would become quite compatible butt-buddies in no time.)

Unless, of course, you went in with prejudice.

This thread is being watched. I see no reason to let Shep veer a thread with a viable discussion on the nature of things in EVA into a flamefest. If you all must yell and scream, you'll do it in the Hall. Otherwise, shove it and keep the thread vaguely on topic. And in the exceedingly small chance Shep contributes positively to this thread, I expect the rest of you to not flame where it isn't needed.

The future apparently holds N2 Mines, several versions of Tokyo because it keeps attracting large explosions, and great leaps forward in extension cord technology. Maybe I'll be able to power my TV on my lawn at last.

What evidence do we have that Yui was actually in control in ep. 1? It could have simply been the EVA instinctually acted on Yui's desire to protect her son.
