Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf are replaced with Black Mage, Fighter, Thief, and Red Mage of 8-Bit theater.

What happens?

Yep, that sounds about right.

Of course, Red Mage would consider it to be the best accessory ever, so he and BM might have to fight it out.

(And Thief runs off with it during the battle, of course!)

I think Fighter is probably the best one to carry the one ring--he's to stupid for it to have any effect on him

Seriously, though, if we assume that the party can be at least as competent as they are in the comic, the Fellowship might be better off.

I mean, Boromir already fucks everything up by the time the Fellowship reaches Rauros, Gandalf is toast (albeit temporarily) which leaves us with Gimli and Legolas who still need to be replaced.

Compare this with a Fellowship of four Hobbits, Aragorn, Fighter (stupid but excellent in a fight, and he probably won't steal the Ring), Black Mage and Red Mage (twice the firepower of Gandalf, plus some advanced healing) plus Thief. The loss of Gandalf's wisdom shoud be mostly compensated for between the last three.

So the fighting ability is at least as good as it was before, same for the problem-solving. Red Mage's healing abilities are at minimum equal to those shown by Gandalf, and the 8-Bit portion of the Fellowship knows about any loyalty issues.

Besides, BM might go along with the Quest. If they destroy the Ring, Sauron is toast, leaving a power vacuum BM can fill. Plus, it eliminates his greatest potential rival.

In what she believes is an act of moral desperation, White Mage tells Black Mage that if he destroy's the one ring, he can 'HAVE' her.

All of the forces of evil on Middle Earth are leveled by the mother of all spells from Black Mage, and the force of the blast carves a nice smooth level highway all the way to the foot of Mount Doom (did I remember the name right)
Black Mage runs like a mad man all the way there (amazing everyone) and tries to toss the Ring in.

However, he gets there and finds out Fighter has it. Black Mage stabs Figther, and Fighter has a muscle convulsion, causing Fighter to be the one that destroy's the ring.

Black Mage falls to his knees screaming at the cruel injustice of the world...
Meanwhile, Thief has robbed all the now dead minions of evil Black Mage killed, while Red Mage was busy trying to teach Gollum about Self Help.
