The Terran Empire as Movie/Series

About the only thing in ST that shows any sign of promise is the Terran Empire, which is a ruthless imperial version of the hated Federation. So long as the writers (the current pathetic batch simply shouldn't be considered) told the story from the Terran Imperial point of view, then the show could be quite entertaining.

"Mirror Mirror" stands as one of my favorie episodes of TOS, I was always intrigued by the Terran Empire and wanted to see more of it (I hated their copout in DS9, replacing the Empire with the boneheaded Alliance) for one thing I wanted to know what was behind Spock's prophecy of destruction in 200 years.

If they threw Enterprise out the window, waited a while and then got some new writers together for this concept, I'd think it could do well.

Ahh... the good old days of the Terran Empire. Captains with sleeveless uniform vests. The gold sashes. Females with knives. Agonisers. Captains' women. Bearded Vulcans.

Even under ideal conditions, they probably couldn't do a series with complete fidelity to that model of the Empire from "Mirror Mirror"; it'd probably get a bit toned down to liken the Terran Empire to Rome. But even that would be a vast improvement over the dungheap rotting in the sun on UPN at present.

Sadly, it would be under the incompetent hand of Brannon Braga, and he'd ruin it as completely as he's ruined the rest of Trek.

That is something wholly for the domain of fanfiction and the fan video, I'm afraid.

That timeline is a huge wank-fest, but it's cool nonetheless...

One problem is, though the concept rocks, the crew would keep trying to kill each other, so a few ep series would make for a cool feature

Mirror, Mirror was my favorite TOS episode. As cool as a spin-off series about the Terran Empire would be.....Beavis and Butthead would fuck it up in the end....so I voted no.

I wish those two would disappear already.

Phaser Lance – Essentially just a massively oversized phaser. Similar to the one under the future Enterprise-D’s saucer section in TNG “All Good Things”. Capable of punching through to the core of a planet in a single sustained shot, causing massive damage. Requires half a minute recharge time after full power continuous firing. Due to the large size of this weapon, only larger capital ships can mount it (Galaxy Class and upwards). Anything smaller than an Akira is completely destroyed by one shot, and most things the size of an Akira up to a Sovereign being hit by this weapon will suffer moderate to heavy damage and total loss of facing shields. Normal yield per beam is ~1000 GT.

Quantum Torpedo – Developed as a weapon to fight the Borg the Quantum Torpedo is about the same size as the venerable photon it replaced in the TE fleet. Its destructive potential is 3x greater than the standard photon, and since it uses a zero point energy explosion as its warhead, there is no chance for the Borg to adapt to it ahead of time as its explosive frequency is unknown till the explosion occurs. Mounted on all new TE ships as standard. Older vessels can be modified to carry this munition during minor refits and overhauls. Torpedo can be set for proximity detonation at expense of warhead damage to target. Standard yield is ~950 MT. Proximity yield varies due to distance of explosion from target, but generally ~400 MT to 800 MT.

Hyper Com – Once the TE began to get really big, R&D began to work on a longer ranged version of the standard subspace com. The end result is the Hyper Com, allowing near instantaneous communication across up to ¾ of the Galaxy.

No. It's only a wankfest if the technology is advanced purely for the sake of being advanced; i.e. the story revolves aound the tech, not the characters. As long as the tech is secondary to the story, 'wankfest' is a rather sad critism.

Sorry, this is not an intention to pad my post...

The timeline and advancement in tech actually reminds me of SM Stirling's books about the Draka, "Marching Through Georgia" et al. Where an empire grows at a seemingly exponential rate (exaggeration I know, but the point is made) - tech advances in leaps and bounds that make the head spin, etc. Well, at least the Terran Empire is not like the Draka, they aren't perfect as SM Stirling has made his own Draka out to be.

Again, I do like the inclusion of species and some tech from Star Fleet Battles into the timeline, the Hydrans, ISC, Lyrans, SWAC shuttles, fighters, etc...

The Draka weren't perfect, they were just highly optimised for conflicts with other cultures at their same level. Stirling tends to create things like the Draka in most of his writing eventually.
