Abaddon of course managed to escape by jumping to warp dangerously near the star's gravity well.

Sometimes a little help goes a long ways. If it hadn't been for that help, Abaddon /would/ have captured at least a 4th Blackstone without severe losses, destroyed another star, and who knows what else.

True, but the imperium would have won the war anyway, however Abaddon would have got away with 4 fortresses at least. which would not have been good in the long run.

True, but the imperium would have won the war anyway, however Abaddon would have got away with 4 fortresses at least. which would not have been good in the long run.

Of course they would have. This wasn't a full blown invasion though. The Gothic sector was a cube of space 200 ly to a side. Hardly a large chunk of real estate. This was a raid to get the Blackstone Fortresses. And it could be that Abaddon could have gotten all 6 Blackstones before the Imperium was able to bring in reinforcements. I don't think I need to state how bad that would have been for the Imperium.

Well, if you were the Imperium, would you want to face Abaddon's entire fleet, backed by 5 Blackstone Fortresses, each wielding 8 Warp Cannons? And perhaps with the Planet Killer there too?

If I can the entire sector fleet. several SM chapters. A whole pile of eldar and X fixed defenses. Yeah. Of couse abaddon could always launch a simultaneous assault on both, the question is, does he trust his underlings?

I don't think the C'tan can mess with reality much rather they effectorise culture-style (though less powerful) alien minds, hence how they are able to make people fall on the floor and throw up while seeing their deaths. etc.
