New BSG Premier: "33" and "Water"
Yes, I know there's a thread, but I'm not wading through spoilers for the rest of the season. Some things I noted:
Human population:
"33"
50,296
49,998 (Clerical error)
47,972 (Loss of Olympic Carrier)
47,973 (Birth aboard Rising Star)
"Water"
45,265 (Baltar's number, I think)
47,958 (Number on President's population count later on in the episode)
There are roughly 5,251 Sagittarians left.
The series, from pilot to "Water," only spans about 8 days.
The Agroship destroyed in the pilot is mysteriously among the fleet, as is a ship similiar to the Olympic Carrier.
There's a planet named Triton (previously a name of a Battlestar) and the colonies Picon and Virgon were confirmed.
There is a ship named the Virgon Express.
Were Starbuck and Baltar doing the nasty in a preview thing at the end of "Water?"
---
I really don't care that much about Halo. They better do something interesting with him.

Thought these two episodes were excellent. My bad reviews of the pilot episode notwithstanding I'm very happy where this is going so far. My favorite moments were the president expressing some joy at the very end of that grim ass "33" when she heard about the baby being born. Very Nicely done. I liked how they all looked so damned exhausted and beat near the end of the episode. Having pulled a series of late and all nighters in a row at the office it really can get that bad with people missing stuff and getting snippy.
One thing I don't like is a possible romance between Starbuck and Baltar. Sorry, I just don't see it. No chemistry and couldn't see what one would see in the other.
Another romance that I DO like is one I'm guessing at since the pilot. I have a feeling that the president and Apollo are going to end up together. They have a nice chemistry going together and it would be intriguing and unique to see an older woman/younger man romance.
BY FAR BVlatar is my favorite character.
Looking foward to seeing Richard Hatch next week.
But there are a few nits - one of my main gripes what is it with Cylons and sex? They just want to fuck all the time and now Six wants to have a baby with Baltar? C'mon.
And the Cylons are fundies?! Where's the logic in a machine being a deist?

Yeah, but he could have just hit the last page and posted without reading anything.
*sigh* I'm really just pissed that I put my comments about the premiere in there instead or waiting or starting my own thread, that's all...

The human models are there to find out about humans and their emotions. Just look at Six, she's fallen in love with Baltar, and in later episodes it will be shown just what kinds of divisions can lead in between the Cylons in their quest to learn about humans and their emotions. I really think that the Human Model Cylons are there for more than just infiltration.Stravo wrote: But there are a few nits - one of my main gripes what is it with Cylons and sex? And about the Cylons being fundies, i see it either two ways. 1) They're being led by someone who is yet unseen and is leading the Cylons with their vision of God (Count Iblis maybe?), or 2) A powerful central AI which the Cylon models think as God and it has, as the opening credits say "A Plan".

I'm guessing the Cylons use religion as a metaphor for their strict hierarchy. In the commentary track on the miniseries DVD, Moore pointed out that we really don't know if Six is actually a chip in Baltar's brain or a figment of his imagination.Stravo wrote:And the Cylons are fundies?! I love the way that the marooning of the tour guide and destruction of the Olympic Carrier, both heinous acts done by the suggestion of Baltar, have turned out to be the right decision in the end. It's hard to hate him.
My favorite piece of dialogue thus far:
Kallie: "Why do the Cylons come every thirty-three minutes? Why not every thirty-four or thirty-five?"
Chief: "Kallie. Shut up."

My question is when they go to the Caprica subplot with 'Helo', they always have the little tag on the bottom of the screen saying "Cylon Occupied Caprica".
So did the Cylon's occupy it? Are the remenents of humanity rounded up and intered? What are they goig to do with them? Force them into a democracy? Slave Labor?
Or is the planet dead and the 'toasters' just roaming around.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

The fluff piece on the new series tonight says that the B story in the series this season that examines whats happening on Caprica.Knife wrote:My question is when they go to the Caprica subplot with 'Helo', they always have the little tag on the bottom of the screen saying "Cylon Occupied Caprica".

All in all, the show was good. Which says alot considering that the mini series was total green baby shit. The characters were actually involved in the events that created the drama. Most of the characters are totally believable. They didn't overplay peoples 'flaws' like the cardboard cut out characters in the mini series.
I'm aghast at the robot born again movment and find it as silly as the sex starved robot theme but all that aside, the evil cylon concience that is preverbally on Baltar's shoulder is marvelous.

I do like how they changed the original's first problem of fuel with the new problem of water. Makes some sense, though fuel should be up there too, unless they got topped off at the depot thingy in the mini series.

I thought she was pretty cute, too, although she really looked like hell at the start of "33"...Old Plympto wrote:Callie, the ground crew tech, is teh hot.

Not really. If I recall, the Cylons mostly targeted the major cities, and in the series seems to be in the process of spreading out in mop-up and weeding procedures.

The only thing that really made me cringe was that whole "Repent your sins and be spared" scene.
From the "Lowdown" special, it seems like they're going to have Baltar make a transition from an "Evil" atheist who only gives a damn about himself, to a decent god fearing man.
This is a subplot I will not enjoy......
Other than that, it was very good.

And this is why you don't watch anything produced by Ronald D. Moore after he had his brain surgically removed and replaced with a bag of elephant semen.-Gramzamber, on why Caprica sucks

That's why I hopped out of the other thread - I don't want to read spoilers, I want to see it unfold in front of me.StarshipTitanic wrote:Yes, I know there's a thread, but I'm not wading through spoilers for the rest of the season.
Baltar's number was the civilian population, as he stated when he gave it. Which leaves only 2,693 military.Human population:
"Water"
45,265 (Baltar's number, I think)
I was thinking, towards the end of "Water", that the civilians have been sitting around for a week all freaked-out, shellshocked, and bored. They are going to need to give the survivors something to do. Obviously, you've got ship maintenance to worry about, but you can't have tens of thousands of people sitting around twiddling their thumbs indefinitely.
I'm thinking they should probably get some into the military, to back up their current roster which will, inevitably, suffer attrition.
They can't have two agroships? The Agroship destroyed in the pilot is mysteriously among the fleet
I swear I saw in the Lowdown that the Cylons are polytheistic (it was when they showed a page of the BSG bible the creater had written up).Darksider wrote:The only thing that really made me cringe was that whole "Repent your sins and be spared" scene.

The religion aspect is the only thing that has me worried about the show. If this becomes the 700 Club in Space, I'm not watching.

May I remind you that most of the sex-obession is coming from Baltar's Number-Six-Who-Isn't-There? Sure, the "real" Number Six screwed his brains out, but then, she was obviously manipulating Baltar and you have to admit, with him it's a very effective method. After he escapes Caprica, is his Number Six from a brain chip or his own fevered pseudopsychotic imagination? At some point someone is going to make a comment about how this guy is starting to lose it.Stravo wrote:But there are a few nits - one of my main gripes what is it with Cylons and sex? I will also remind you that it is ONLY Number Six among the Cylons who has mentioned God of any sort. Not that we've had a lot of dialog with any other Cylon, except Boomer, who doesn't know she's a Cylon (although she's probably starting to worry about waking up with detonators and such).
Finally, I'd like to share a picture I found on the web:
Two Starbucks. And, if you look carefully in the background, you'll see that they're probably in.... a Starbucks. That's just too cure, isn't it?

Wait, one of the main characters in this series has a villain implanted in his head through a neuro-chip?
