Cannon and HP

Nothing to do with literature, and everything to do with the history and mythology of Alchemy.
In the traditions of Alchemy, the Philosopher's Stone is the item that can variously turn base metals into gold and create the elixir of life. As it does in the book.
There is no myth of a 'Sorcerer's stone' anywhere in anything. Therefore the title is silly and wrong.

They know it's not real, but the books were created to make them imagine that it was real.Vendetta wrote:But if they read the book, they'll learn it won't they.Stormbringer wrote:Yeah, but your average kiddy doesn't know that.

That's the point though, the myth of the Philosopher's Stone IS real, and the concept of the artifact is he same as it is in the Harry Potter story.verilon wrote:They know it's not real, but the books were created to make them imagine that it was real.
If it were left alone, many more people would now know that (even if they didn't know they knew), they would have a slightly broader classical education, but they don't, because Those in the Know don't think they can handle long words like 'philosopher'.

Bah.
Re: Cannon and HP
It'sgot an inuniverse explanation. THe more powerful and experienced you are, the more naturally the magic flows. That's why the students need wands and words, the Older Weasley children only need wands and occasional words, and the professors and such can do it automatically.Crown wrote:It's just in the second movie (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), we see wizards (Lucius Malfoy) being able to manipulate magic with out the use of their wands. Mostly telekenisis from what I have seen. Now this is never shown to happen in the novels, so what does this mean?

The creator of the universe (the writer) obviously has the right to determine what is and is not canon for that universe. In this case, Miss Rowlings retains the rights, and as such the books are canonical.

You forgot the Smurfs. It was the entire point device for Gargamel, I think he needed one to make his Philosopher's Stone... hm wait, I think the US cartoon dumbed it down so he just wanted to eat them.Mr Bean wrote:I always wondered about espcilly considering the number of kids shows that feature the Philosopher stone, I went to the best authority on the subject my nephews 12, 14 who kindly informed me(After demanding Candy, hey it was Hallowean 2001 at the time(When I recived the set from a Aunt) that so far around half of the shows have featured it
Shows they named
Scoobe-doo
Gargoles
Buffy(They are biog fans of her)
Recently, Spongebob Squarepants
So if my 12 and 14 year old Nephews could think off the top of thier head of four shows featuring the Philosopers stone.... well one could always call the publisher dumb or claim poor memory on the part of the public
And acutal to the question of how Dark the books are from the Words of Miss Rowling stated she was writing the books as slowly as she did so that she COULD get progressivly darker, in her words she wanted the books to grow up with the children

The shows all use the Philosopher's Stone because it actually did exist (sort of--in that it was the goal of alchemy). Its properties were similar to those associated with it in HP, and I doubt not in the other shows he mentioned. Much of the magic and fantastic creatures in HP are based on legend and myth. It should not surprise anyone when they are used by multiple sources.
