Intergalactic space crime

Post by Next of Kin »

Alright, you're an intergalactic thug looking for a universe to ply your trade. Would you work for the likes of Jabba the Hutt or Talon Karrde, or would you settle for life on ds9 as one of Quark's lackies (or work for someone else)? Personally I couldn't stand working for Quark as he would offer ya a free pint of synth-ale and then skim 30% from your cut. On the other hand, Jabba would treat you like bantha fodder but at least the rewards have the possibility of being quite great . Hmm...that is unless you piss him off...

I would like working for Tallon Karde because he rarely smuggles anything. Instead, he deals in secrets and information. I do not like taking risks, and Karde seems to take care of his people and his ships. While he might not have the muscle that Jabba has, he is certainly smarter. Plus I wouldn't have to worry about him turning on me, so long as I did my job reasonably well.

I would definetley work in the SW galaxy to be sure! More alien species/cultures/conflicts and thus opportunities for smugglling oportunities! :D

I'd be a smuggler on B5. Total lack of security and the abundance of losers in downbelow make it a gangster's wet dream. And then Sheridan & Co. start relying on you for shipments. :D

I'd work for the Orion Syndicate. They actually seem to have some balls (about the only ones in the ST universe), and everyone else in the ST universe is a pussy, which makes plundering ridiculously easy. Not to mention planets like Risa :D

Tallon Karde would be an excelent boss for me as he and I are alike in our drive to know things

I think the way he does and in RL I'm a pretty good shot with a gun(blaster in SW :D) so I could make myself very useful to him

Seriously; why be a pirate or criminal in ST? There's fuck all to steal. Correction; there's actually a lot to steal, but it appears (from what we've seen on screen) to break down into:

A)Federation technology (as we all know, frequently beige)
B) Alien technology (often slate grey or metallic, but otherwise seemingly fuctionally identical to their UFP equivalents)
C) Alien archaeological artifacts (Wooo! I risked my life to steal a vase, or an alien statue shaped like a penis! If I'm really lucky, it'll do Weird Technobabble Shit when I take it to a particular location on a long-dead planet. Gosh.)

And frankly, I ain't getting out of bed for any of that.
Star Wars, on the other hand, is a different proposition, for the following reasons:

A) You have relatively easy access to fully combat-capable starships. Fighters and combat systems can apparently be bought over the counter, or are common enough to steal without massive effort.
B)There is a massive interstellar "black" market that actually seems very overt in places. Maybe in many places. Good for you in a lot of ways. There's always going to be work, always going to be a customer for what you steal. And also, there's always going to be some other criminal mook freighting illegal goods who you can rip off.
C) The presence of an open interstellar commerce network, with many thousands (probably millions) of privately owned freighters moving around is open to piracy pretty much by default. Plus a shipping corporation is an easy cover for a pirate/crime gang.
D) Drugs. There's a big market for them. Easy money.
E) An open war between powerful combatants means you can be a privateer. There's always going to be a RA/NR General or Imp Moff who's shorthanded, and not too bothered about who fills the gap. So what if they think you're underhand scum? Fuck 'em, you know you're a businessman/woman/being, and that's all that counts.
F) If all else fails, you can rob a bank. They surely have banks in Star Trek, but there must be millions of the places in the SW galaxy. Who's going to be concerned in Coruscant if a bank in the outer rim gets whacked? Or ten? Or 100?

So it's a Star Wars pirate's life for me, thanks.

There's also the GE, NR, not to mention the CSA (not THAT CSA, Sheppard, the OTHER ONE!), and other actually competent police forces out to get you, not to mention competing criminals like the Hutts who wouldn't mind to expend a little effort to remove the competition. Oh yeah, and Luke. And remember, whatever is available for you, at least as much or even more so is available for them. I would still want to be a Orion, because they have a monopoly on organized crime and nobody has the balls to do anything about it. Hell, if I was stuck in the ST universe period, I would immediately find ways to get into the syndicate (much better than that boring drone life, just be a Borg in all but name. No thanks!)

I would stay in the Star Trek Galaxy.

Reason:
  • - Their Police is pathetic. :!:
    - Their Navies are pathetic (oh wait, they are also the police).
    - It is still largely unknown territory. A lot of places to hide.
    - It is time for someone to setup their personal empire there and beat the snot out of the UFP, Klingons, Cardies, Romulans, etc. And that person will be me.
    - Lots of undefended colonies.
    - Lots of pacifists. :P
Cheers,

Meghel

I'd still work for Jabba. He constantly surrounds himself with yes men to soothe his rather :D large ego. After gaining His Slimeyness' trust you could probably skim a couple of percentages for yourself. Altough you'd have to be pretty discreet about stealing from a guy who owns a rancor as a pet and has directions to the sarlacc pit.
