What are the essential Warhammer 40K books?
I've been following the Imperium vs Empire thread and I've become rather curios about the WH40K universe. So what are the essential materials for a newbie?

The Rulebooks for BFG, 40k, and Epic.
Gameworkshop rule books are always very heavy on background, so they tend to be the best places to start, they have lots of nice data as well..
Have I mention that 110 Petawatt per second plasma reactor in the back of the 40k rule book ?
If you dont feel like shelling out over a 100 quid, the following Novels and anthologies are good.
Eye of Terror: Provides a good overview of the Universe, mainly the Imperium and Chaos though, gives a general impression of the place, and has an absolutely brilliant plot twist.
Deathwing: An anthology of storys, many from the older times of 40k, again, it gives a nice broad look at 40k, includes stuff on assassins, Dark Angels, chaos, Eldar etc.
Into the Maelstrom: Another Anthology
Words of Blood:Yet another anthology
You might want to take a peek at some of the Graphic novels as well, They are great, I suggest you start with one called "Obvious Tactics" first, as its a great story, and extremely action packed!
Daemonfuge is probably a little to much for a newbie, but its very nice on the eyes, good graphics and drawing..
Blood Quest is one you should try after youve assimilated ,
Titan is good for seeing how the 40k heavy hitters go at it..
Novels to read once you have got your bearings are the absolutely brilliant Gaunts Ghosts series by Dan Abnett, these books are golden!
For some kickass...and I mean that, Space Marine action , read Storm of Iron and Nightbringer by Graham Mcneil..
Those are brilliant books, nowhere else will you read of Space Marines rappeling down a ten kilometre cable, and Titans booting BattleTanks across the battlefield!
