That's probably why Jack is such a successful character: unlike the companions, he already knows all the important stuff- he knows how to fly the TARDIS, and he knows what the Doctor is feeling. In PotW this is best expressed when Jack simply says 'Rose is safe'. He's not fixed in 'what are you doing Doctor' exposition mode. :)

I'll never understand why Girl in the Fireplace isn't appreciated more. If Doomsday hadn't been so powerful, it would be my favourite S2 story by far.

Girl in the Fireplace is pretty widely loved. It won and award or two, too.
Check out TREKWARS (not involving furries!)

EVIL BRIT CONSPIRACY: Son of York; bringing glorious summer to the winter of your discontent.

KNIGHTS ASTRUM CLADES: I am a holy knight! Or something rhyming with knight, anyway...

It's a shame that she never got to join the crew. It would have been nice to have a companion that actually had a grasp of language.

In my book "My dearest Doctor, I am in the gravest of danger. Please come to my aid." beats "Doctor, heeeeellllllllppp". The thinking man's crumpet, surely. :)

"School Reunion" was arguably the best episode of Season Two and it had everything to do with companions, more so than "The Girl in the Fireplace".
