'The Tripods' 1980s BBC TV series any good?

I've got dim memories of seeing snatches of this series on TV when I was a kid and hearing people talk about it at school and thinking it looked interesting. The other day I spotted series one on DVD and I'm considering getting it.

Has anyone hear seen it, if so would you recommend it? No spoilers please.

Its not bad in a sit back and just turn your mind off way. The effects look a little dated by todays standards, but its quite watchable.

It's an 80s bbc product so the effects are bound to be pants, I'm not concerned with eye candy though just whether or not the plots up to much.
